Testing for heat-resistance
Pegatanke Steel, Pegatanke Clear, the original J-B Weld epoxy, and J-B MarineWeld Gray were used to glue screws to the sanded and degreased bottom of an Altoid tin. The curing time for each was at least 3 days at room temperature. The tin was baked several times in an infrared toaster oven set to 500 deg. F. The durations of the sessions were 0.5 minutes, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and 20 minutes. After the 2-minute session, the hold of the Pegatanke Clear on the tin was broken; the screw was still standing, but it was no longer attached. After the 5-minute session, the Pegatanke Clear had turned brown and was beginning to melt. When the J-B Weld Original screw was gently tapped with a screwdriver, it came loose. So those two screws were removed from the oven. After the 10-minute session, both of the remaining screws were still rather firmly attached (gentle tapping didn't dislodge them). However, I was able to crumble some of the Pegatanke Steel with the tip of the screwdriver. After the 15-minute session, I was barely able to crumble a bit of the MarineWeld with the screwdriver. Both screws were still attached and withstood gentle tapping. For the 20-minute session, I moved the tin closer to the overhead infrared bulb. Afterward, the process of crumbling some of the softened excess Pegatanke with the screwdriver caused the screw to come loose. It was more difficult to crumble the MarineWeld; tapping its screw caused it to break loose. The ranking from most to least heat-resistant:J-B MarineWeld GrayPegatanke SteelJ-B Weld original epoxyPegatanke ClearIn my opinion, the claims by the manufacturer for the heat-resistance of the Pegatanke epoxies have no basis in reality.

The media could not be loaded.
