Save a Middle School Teacher's Sanity With this Blessed Book
I've taught high school English for 7 years now, and this is my first year teaching middle school. This book has been a life-saver. My middle schoolers are, for the most part, woefully behind in English skills and knowledge. My attempts at grammar instruction (which have been very successful with my high schoolers) have been met with bad attitudes and meltdowns and very little learning...Enter Hot Fudge Mondays. The kids actually like to do these activities. I handed out the Pop Can activity early in the year, and students who threw a fit when I asked them to write a few sentences were suddenly begging me for more time to write and filling up a whole page. The activities are quirky and hilarious without being offensive at all (in other words, middle schoolers think they're funny but they don't pander to middle school potty humor). There are a wide variety of activities to choose from that suit my educational needs. And, amazingly, my more advanced students enjoy the activities and don't get bored either. One thing to be aware of is that this book is focused pretty solely on the parts of speech. I need activities for other grammatical elements as well and was pleased to discover that this author has also written a book called DownWrite Funny that's designed to teach grammar/ writing principles. I've purchased it and am looking forward to using it in coordination with Hot Fudge Mondays. Here's to many more successful middle school English periods, thanks to Mr. Randy Larson!

It's okay, but not what I expected
I agree with the other two star reviewer that this book is okay, but not worth the hype. It is basically a typical grammar exercise book with some interesting, but not overly different, lessons. The content seems geared more towards middle school than upper elementary. I couldn't find anything in the description to suggest it was geared to that group so I had purchased it hoping for a match. Also, the pages are extremely boring in presentation, which adds to the lackluster review. I had really hoped for more. As for for other suggestions that may be better (although I'm still reading these and forming my opinions): Mechanically Inclined, Funner Grammar, Teacher's Guide to Sentence Combining. This book will be returned.

my high schooler likes this!
I've used this book with my high school aged son who had grammar all these years but hated it. This he enjoys! It does not teach technical aspects such as diagramming sentences. However, it does review and provide realistic practice, in a variety of manners for each topic, for all the parts of speech, emphasizing why they matter in real writing/real life! The other reviews sounded like this is for younger kids. I disagree, I think it is for the child who has had difficulty with grammar and needs to tighten up their understanding of the relations between words. Another very good grammar book is Jensen's Punctuation. Good luck!

Can be easily integrated into lessons - fun and engaging
I would not really build an entire lesson around the activities in this book, but use them in the context of a unit which requires focus on parts of speech. The worksheets are engaging and fun, not the usual droll and uninspiring worksheets taken straight out of textbooks. I would use them as sponge activities, or as filler activities when there's some time left over at the end of a lesson. In doing so, instructional time can be utilized to its maximum and students will benefit from learning. This is an invaluable resource for LA teachers, grades 5 and up.

Who likes Grammar?
Kids today just don't like Grammar. Most adults don't either. I was excited when I bought this book, because I thought it would be a fun way to learn Grammar. Grammar takes thinking and hard work, no matter how you fun it up. There were cleaver mini-lessons that helped relate each part of speech to something more concrete; however, it is still hard to teach and learn.

Great Summer Workbook
My son struggled in English in 5th grade. Although he passed, our school system cut out summer school. I ordered some workbooks for him for the summer to help him. I must say this is the best workbook out of all of the ones I ordered. It helps teach the various parts of speech. I admit my son struggled through the book, but at the end of the summer his confidence has improved and he understands his parts of speech now!

Hot Fudge Monday
As a high school English teacher of almost thirty years, I bought Hot Fudge Monday: Tasty Ways to Teach Parts of Speech to Students Who Have a Hard Time Swallowing Anything to Do with Grammar from Amazon.com, and I loved it from the first time I used it in class. I work with gifted ninth graders, so I adapted the topics for our purposes. My students enjoyed it, too. I highly recommend Hot Fudge Monday: Tasty Ways to Teach Parts of Speech to Students Who Have a Hard Time Swallowing Anything to Do with Grammar to any teacher looking for some fresh topics and ideas to make grammar fun.
