Diary of Charlotte Forten: A Free Black Girl Before the Civil War (First-Person Histories)

This Review is the words of a 7 year old girl
I love this book because it gives the dates of when things happened. I like that it has pictures, and that it has definitions of hard words on the same page. Even though it is a diary this book goes into more detail about what else happened at the same time.I would recommend this book to people who are interested in black biographies. There are other diaries just like this for people who don't want to learn about a black girl.

Excellent, high interest series
This series of first person histories is wonderful. The text contains first hand accounts from actual diaries or journals. The book is laid out well with photos, illustrations, and other features that will keep children's interest high. These may be more appealing to children who enjoy reading about history, but may resist tackling a bigger book. These books are accessible and friendly. I would even suggest them for students who have reading based learning differences like dyslexia. My only caution is that the journal entries are in the actual words of the writer - which is wonderful for accuracy and a feeling of time and place, but this may be confusing to emerging readers as they contain the mistakes in spelling, grammar, etc.
