Louie: The Complete Season 4

Louie Finally makes it to Amazon Prime!
I've watch the other 3 seasons of Louie on Amazon Prime and I've waited for season four, and it's finally here. Louis C.K. continues the story of Louie, a semi-successful comic trying to make it in New York. The series is in no way a sit-com. Rather it's a complicated story of a kind of loser guy doing his best to raise his daughters and succeed in the career he's chosen as a stand up comic. Louis C.K. is the driving force behind this production, he's the writer, the director, the editor, and the star. The production values are truly amazing considering he does so much of the work himself and how low the budget is from FX. Louis C. K. puts it all on the screen, with tons of location filming that include mansions and Maseratis and Ferraris with a bunch of extras, and in one of the past series he had helicopter shots. How he can afford this is a miracle. The cast is first rate, but the standouts are his two daughters. They are the antithesis of the stereotypical child actors. They are quirky without being fake or too cute. Ursula Parker, who stars as Jane, Louie's younger daughter, is an amazing talent who is actually a concert quality violinist, and Hadley Delany as Lilly does a fine job as a moody teenager. With Louis C.K.'s reputation over past seasons, he's been able to get a who's who of comedy superstars and top notch actors including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Jay Leno and the late Robin Williams and Joan Rivers. The fourth season includes Ellen Burstyn, F. Murray Abraham, and Charles Grodin as Louie's doctor. The show is criticized for not being funny enough. Louis C.K. tried the tradition sit-com route with the failed "Lucky Louie", so he developed this series which is vastly better. It can be hilarious, but much of the show is a dramedy about the over weight, unlucky in love, and scrapping-by stand up comedian Louie and the trials and tribulations of his ordinary life. As it turns out, his life far from ordinary, you just have to take the ride with him. You just have to realize this is a sophisticated look at an adult life which is sometimes funny and sometimes not, but it's always interesting. Check it out. Louie's interaction with his daughters is well worth the price of admission and while you may cringe at some of the tough spots Louie gets himself in, it's well worth watching.

An evolved rhythm from past seasons
This is the second revision of my review now that all of the episodes of Season 4 have been released. As I originally stated I have watched every episode of the first three seasons at least twice, and several of them very many times. I initially felt a little disappointed and confused as this season unfolded, even though some scenes appealed to me very much (I have repeatedly delighted in the poker scene where everybody discusses masturbation and sex toys, and I have shared the impressive "fat girl" speech with several people who agree it struck some vital chord). Overall it is a very different season than previous years, and somebody just starting off with the series and wanting to see more of the "funny" episodes should probably start elsewhere, since there are much fewer laughs per episode. What this season offers is much more dramatic tension and experimentation with the whole concept of a narrative arc: one story line progressed over six episodes, another story of his adolescence stretched over two episodes, and so on. There were many interesting complexities this season: from hard drama to surrealism to virtual slapstick to sly asides to inspired guest appearances to.....humor: it's in there, just not to the degree of past seasons. There were moments of pure discomfort, including an infamous attempted sexual assault that seemed to dare the viewer to continue to like Louie. And both of his precious daughters displayed significantly distressing behavior this season that had me worried about their well-being. Every episode contained at least one moment of brilliance and something to reflect upon (such as the intriguing metaphor of two people dating who literally don't speak the same language) and the season as a whole displays a lot to commend itself to the discerning viewer.

Real, clever, creative, flawed, heart-centered (anti-)hero
Louie has it all. My partner and I stumbled onto the wit and wisdom of Louie C.K. via Jerry Seinfeld. We started watching "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," and one of the episodes featured this droll, deep, angst-ridden middle-aged prophet who immediately captured my notice: his story of running his yacht aground was so well done, so comically creative, that I became an instant fan. Because it's the 21st century, I Googled him. Then I found some of his standup on Netflix (a miracle, since Netflix streaming has a pathetically slim collection of offerings), then started watching his show. Through the miracle of Amazon, we're now up to Season 4, which remains as comically fresh and no-holds-barred as prior seasons were. As far as I'm concerned, Louie C.K. is this generation's George Carlin. Whereas Jerry Seinfeld points out the comic infrastructure of every potential situation, Louie shows us parts of ourselves we'd rather not look at. (Consider Vanessa's speech on fat women.) I'm still not a fan of Louie C.K's vulgarity, but I get that it's part of the package, part of who he is. George Carlin made us blush (and made history) with "the seven words" -- Louie's observations make that bit seem tame by comparison. But that's Louie. Louie is about life. And sometimes life is messy. He makes us laugh about it.

Lower Quality
I called FOX to see if the product is a fake because of the extremely cheap and poor burn of the dvd. It turns out it is a legit product. It is not a commercial grade dvd, but a consumer grade with purple back.
