Casper the Friendly Ghost Vol 1: Haunted Hijinks (CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST TP)

65 years ago I learned to read with Casper and friends. Bought this to help a granddaughter. The illustrations are more colorful than I expected, but the Harvey cartoons are as charming as ever. A good purchase.

American Mythology Productions does a fair job of restoring the classic Harvey characters to existence after an absence of some 30 years. The results are mixed, at best. Harvey Comics had some decades worth of editorial input to create a perfect formula for all these characters, they stuck with it, and while their comics can be accused of repetition, it always worked. The credits alone for this brief volume list 15+ creators and they probably lacked a strong editorial hand, meaning there appears a lot of uncertainty as to what makes a good "Harvey" story. The 13 short stories all try their best, but some of the artists are ridiculously off-model while others are spot on. The one saving grace is that the Casper characters get to team up with Hot Stuff many times, which is something the original Harvey books frustratingly lacked. All in all, a mixed bag, but they tried. Perfect for nostalgia-seekers wanting to recapture just a glimpse of those bygone comics, and very recommended for younger readers.
