A must-read for campers!
We just bought a trailer and plan to do a lot of camping particularly in the Lake Tahoe region. Until the Wilkes’ book, I didn’t know a guide like this existed as a “how-to” for the beginning camper. Experienced campers will appreciate the information on whether or not the camp site has shade, privacy, and a view of the lake. This book is already “dog-eared” and we haven’t even gone out yet.

The Campers Survival Guide
If you are looking for an inclusive list of all camp sites in the Lake Tahoe region this book is NOT for you. I suggest you Google something like "Lake Tahoe places to camp RV etc" and browse the one million plus list of pages that have been published. Be sure to avoid any virus infected web sites. If you are looking to find a private spot, in a campsite that has a driveway length that can accommodate your rig, that you can reach without a machete, or a tent site that is intended for camping and not neighborly voyeurism, this guide IS ESSENTIAL for you.I serve as COO to Red Rock Mega Storage opening soon, North of Reno. The facility especially caters for the discerning owners of higher value RV's etc. who want to store their vehicle near to their vacation destination. My assignment was to review the campsites around Lake Tahoe, looking for such owners, to let them know we are opening soon.I have known Patrick and Kim for some years, including their love of nature and sincere attention to detail. They offered me a copy of their book to assist in my assignment. I knew I would not find the owner of a 45ft motor home in a camp site restricting access to vehicles of less than 20ft. This guide, including information on vehicle access and driveway lengths, plus a whole lot more was exactly what I needed. As we toured the campsites, by this I mean drove into location around Lake Tahoe, looking at the individual sites to do our marketing research, I became progressively more and more impressed with the guide. I decided to write this factual review from a non-campers perspective. As a person who has compared 35% of the pages to the actual facts on the ground. The guide includes a sound overview of each PRIVATE camp site around the Lake. It lists an amazingly accurate review of EVERY site, by site number. I did not need the information like when to book, if there were bear boxes, toilets etc. for my purpose. I did need how to find each camp site, and can affirm by personal experience that the directions are spot on. Even to warning us where not to try enter, which I can also attest was also spot on ...I have to think that privacy ratings and driveway lengths would be invaluable to visitors planning a RV / camping holiday. This guide makes the difference between parked next to the dump station overlooking highway 89, or nestled in a secluded nook overlooking the delights of Lake Tahoe. After exploring 14 camp sites (for my less than usual purpose) on Tuesday, and equipped with this guide to help me in my needs, I can declare without reservation that this guide is beyond essential for any camper who desires to camp, in any modicum of decency, by reserving a "safe" site in the camp site of your choice.

The best resource for campsite selection
The Wilke’s have added to their collection of private campsites in the Sierra with their most recent book on Lake Tahoe. I found their other book, “Eastern Sierra and Death Valley Camping with Privacy,” to be very helpful when planning backpacking trips for the Sierra Club or personal trips. Compared to the peace of the backcountry, I am often dismayed by the lack of privacy in campgrounds so for me, this is the most valuable resource I have found to selecting a good site for the night before a backpacking trip. The descriptions of each site are rich in detail about what you’ll see from the site, whether it’s a road, grove of trees or river view. Privacy ratings are provided for the campsite as well as the driveway and the approximate length of the driveway is provided (very helpful for RVers). It’s also helpful that they give a realistic description of how many tents will fit and whether it’s better for tents or motorized vehicles. There are a lot of campgrounds around Lake Tahoe and the thickness of the book reflects that at a hefty 650 pages. There’s a handy index of campgrounds in the back while the table of contents lists the geographic area and a list of campgrounds in each. At the beginning of each section, an overall description of the campground is provided with such information as whether reservations are taken, contact details, presence of bear boxes and flush toilets, whether dogs are allowed, number of campsites and whether cell service is available. For me, the elevation information is critically important as I am susceptible to altitude sickness above 10,000 feet if I don’t acclimate properly. I plan my first night’s elevation carefully to maximize acclimatization. Nearby restaurants, grocery stores and attractions are listed. There are no maps but when I’m planning a trip, I find it convenient to have the book in front of me while I research the campground online so I can find maps and search for availability. I was so pleased to receive a review copy and look forward to trip planning with this by my side. This is a valuable resource for anyone who spends time camping around Lake Tahoe.

A peaceful, private campground for the perfect trip - Get this book
This book is a must for all campers who have tents, RV's, motor-homes or trailers. Kim and Patrick did a fantastic job of not only describing the general layout of the campground but ranked several campsites for each location from A+ to C- as to privacy, lake views, how to reserve, and description taking the guess work out of how to pick the best site for your trip. They have even added little nuggets throughout. If I could give it a six rating I would. I received a review copy but this is going in my bookshelf for future reference any time I need a campsite.

access to reviews
I don't have the book. What I want to know is what happened to all the 4-star and 3-star reviews? I cannot access them.
