Made an unusable SD card usable with Windows again
6 stars even. Why, it's just a cable? I have a Canon D3300 which is about 10 years old. It still works great and takes solid pictures. Haven't used it much in those 10 years as phones are pretty good for most shots and more convenient. I'm in an area now that is geographically beautiful, and want to use the DSLR for higher quality photos (print worthy). My laptop is Windows 11 Pro. I took photos on a recent day hike and put the SD card into my USB-C hub with a reader. My computer said the SD card was unreadable and needed to be formatted. I tried a second hub, same issue. I bought a new SD Card, same issue. I updated the camera firmware, same issue. I made a Linux VM and it was able to read the card. Mind you, the camera read and wrote to it without issue. I was stumped. As a last ditch effort, I decided to try a USB connection between the camera and my computer. It worked flawlessly, saving me from having to buy a new DSLR just to read the files. In summary, windows 11 may have issues reading SD cards from a DSLR. This is likely hub dependent and whether appropriate driver's are available. Using the camera as the SD card reader solved this problem.
