Nice minimal managed switch, missing a few things that would make it amazing
This switch is on the very bottom edge of what could be considered "managed," but what it does support works well.I'm not a fan of the web interface; I would prefer to manage it via SSH as I do my other managed switches. The web interface is a bit clunky, but works. My biggest complaint is the inability to set the management VLAN, it seems to always place it on the untagged network.Link aggregation (LAG) works, just note that it's static addressed-based, not LACP. I missed it the first time in the manual. In Extreme Networks speak, to get it to work I used: "enable sharing <master port> grouping <port list> algorithm address-based L2"I don't know why it needed a non-standard power cable with the funny corner cutout, but a normal now would probably work if you lost or damaged the one it came with. The mount seems pretty secure as long as you mount it properly.

Entire weight supported by 1/8" nut which failed, but otherwise a good design.
I really liked the flexible design of this switch which is why I was willing to pay a premium price for it. The flexibility in mounting options and the power cord were key features since I am a bit OCD about messy tangles of cables. But after being installed for 2 weeks, today I found a design problem with the mount. Initially I had mounted the switch with the wider edge to the mount and had no issues. But today when trying to neaten things up a bit, I decided to see if using the narrow edge mount position would work better. It was in this position for just a minute or two before I determined it wasn't an improvement and decided to go back to the wide face mounting position. Unfortunately, although it appeared the catch on the end had released, the switch would not come away from the mount more than about 1/4 inch. Closer inspection showed the metal plate holding the catch had come loose from the plastic mount. After fully removing the mount, I found the cause to be poor design. The entire weight of the switch is held to the mount by a single screw going into a small nut press fit into the plastic. The nut had pulled out of the plastic by the extra weight of the switch in this orientation that sticks just a bit further out from the mount. I checked the other intact end and it was a similar poor design, but at least it had two screws on either side to distribute the weight better. I am going to try super glue to see if that will secure the nut in the plastic better. If not, a screw through the empty hole all the way into the wall stud should do the trick. But I shouldn't be having to do this on an otherwise premium product. The rest of the design was done so well it is unfortunate that the physical security of a $130 switch all hangs on a 1/8" nut press fit into plastic. It couldn't have cost much more for an actual through bolt.

Excellent for home use
I originally had this mounted in the attic but I placed my hand on the casing and it almost burned me. This was not due to operating temperatures but to the heat in the attic. The manual says it can operate in the attic but I highly suggest putting it inside the house. I had to create a hole in the ceiling of the air return unit and feed cables through that. It stays cool all the time and works as intended. No complicated setup. Easy to use. Recommended for people with little knowledge of networks. I wanted a manager switch but didn’t want to pay for it. This was a very good alternative. Highly recommended.

Works well but instructions are terrible
The clever design of the switch (which allows it to be set up horizontally or vertically) is very convenient, and now that I finally have it set up it is working great. BUT, the instructions that it comes with are incorrect and that was super-painful. It instructs you to set up the switch using the NETGEAR Insight app, but when you do that (20 steps later) it tells you the GSS116E is "not supported by Insight Manager." Uh, thanks for the brain damage NETGEAR! Used the web browser in conjunction with the ProSAFE Plus Configuration Utility and finally got the job done. So thus far my impression is: good product, they just need to give you instructions to set it up that are actually relevant. On the plus side: guy on their chat tech support was ultimately able to help me.

You just keep asking yourself ... why?
1) They market this like its a big step up from their lowest router model yet it is the most basic of routers that should even be sold in these modern times. I have an old cheap GS108T that has dynamic LAG only to find this "non-base" model only supports passive LAG. This can't be much more than a software upgrade but yet it lacks this ability. Thus, low end firmware marketed as something special.2) The utter stupidity of designing the case of this thing so that if you mount it under a shelf, the numbers are all upside down! The very design of this thing is for ease of installation [in "Virtually Anywhere" mounting] yet it is not designed for those areas! It could easily have been manufactured for proper under mount installation too. Just moronicly designed!3) The 8 port model comes with 2 USB charging ports but not the 16 port? What? A feature downgrade for buying the larger model?4) Why they market this as "Pro"Safe when it is so basic is a bait n switch like scam and is worth about half of what they are asking for it for the "actual" feature set. I simply made the mistake of assuming the models that began with a letter series like GSxxx were all the same feature sets but you need to be burdened to actually download all their non-Amazon published data from their website to know what their marketing does not tell you. They simply "cheaped out" in every way from function to design with this thing so don't think you are getting anything much more than an idiotically designed basic 16 port router for the money.

Was dead out of the box
I bought this on sale around Christmas time. I didn't open the box till few months later. When I opened the brand new sealed box, tried to power it up, it wouldn't power up. Called for support and was told its no longer under warranty for support, as support is only for 90days. When I explained that its hardware failure, they offered to replaced it as hardware failure is covered? but I had to cover costs of shipping and returning. Was not too happy with that. Otherwise works ok and has been holding up.
