You can get it into condition to work but it takes a lot of effort
I don't normally write long reviews but I feel it's important in this case, so I will. The biggest issue for this item is the paint on the bottom, you have to remove it so the bottom is flat cast iron. The paint is uneven and will not only effect the performance of the tool but leaves marks along the work (black marks). I ground the paint off on my disk sander, then hand sanded and filed it, then used water stones, arkansas stones and diamond stones to flatten the exposed cast iron. I sharpened the blade and honed it. This all took around 2 hours of labor but after that the item worked well. As with any spokeshave there is trial and error in setting it correctly so be patient with that part and you will have a spokeshave for around $8 each that works equally well with others that cost $100 plus. This is why I gave it three stars ... because after conditioning it as if you were building the item straight out the furnace you can get it work well ... otherwise I'd throw it away.

Great value and well made
Yes, you definitely have to resharpen and straighten the blade before use, and yes, the bottom of the shave is coated in paint for some reason, but you can sand off the paint and sand the surface smooth. For the price, they're heavy duty and well made. Definitely worth more than five bucks a piece. And it has a chip breaker, which is great.

Great tool
With a little (or a lot, the more the better) of elbow grease sharpening the blades you can get some fine shaving. In my experience any plane or chisel will need to be sharpened out of the package except for a very few higher end ones. Great value

Great value for money, requires setup before use.
Like the other reviews said: sharpen the blade & sand or file the sole and you'll have a good tool. For the money, it's tough to beat.Once set up it works great. And there's a 2nd one and two blades. No complaints, just at know that you have to set it up before use.A $1500 guitar needs setup out of the box. So does a $12 spokeshave.

Not worth the hassle. Get what you pay for.
These are crap!!! Save your money and get one from woodcraft. The throat is to wide. The blades don’t hold and edge. The adjustment screws are worthless. The hood down plate is to flexible.

Please don't
Garbage. Not a term I use often or lightly. This has 'New' on the box. No way in .. heck. And who ever had it before me beat it. The coating is broken completely through in places and the lever cap doesnt even fit on one. On the other (came with 2) the lever cap doesn't come off. I haven't tried to use a hammer on it but just about. Honestly after the damage the first one has it didnt seem worth the time to spend any effort trying to make the second one function. Please don't buy these.

These work great,
These spokeshaves work awesome. You can keep one adjusted to a slight depth and the other to a moderate depth to avoid having to adjust them. Great deal.

Buy a Stanley or kunz
Spend a few extra bucks and get a kunz or a Stanley. This spokeshave has basically no sole and it is very bad about chattering. The blades are good and I was able to put a good edge on them but I was disappointed in the spokeshave itself.
