We Will Rock You: Cast Album

We Will Rock You
‘We Will Rock You’ is a musical written by author Ben Elton, which creatively uses the music and lyrics of rock legends Queen to tell a story based in the future where fashion, music and even thoughts are controlled by an oppressive government, and rock music in particular is forbidden. It sounds daft, but it works well. The songs themselves have been altered to fit the narrative of the story, with some lyrics being changed to suit the futuristic settings, or some differing arrangements to maintain the flow of the songs. But as a whole these work pretty well, and definitely do justice to the originals. Queen’s music has always had grandiose elements to it, and ‘We Will Rock You’ really takes the bombast and tweaks it perfectly. With a full orchestra and rock band, and a number of various singers, each with big and powerful voices, this works really well in a theatrical setting. However, the only major complaint of the whole thing is that, while ‘We Will Rock You’ is truly a fun and energetic spectacle, it just can’t compare to the originals. Freddie Mercury’s untouchable charisma and Brian May’s unmistakeable guitar playing are part of the charm of Queen’s music, and while the cast in this recording have more than done a brilliant job, the bottom line is that I’d rather just listen to Queen themselves.‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Are the Champions’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘I Want to Break Free’, ‘Another One Bites the Dust’, ‘Under Pressure’, ‘I Want It All’ and an incredible version of ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’... all the hits are here, and if you’re a fan of Queen then you might just enjoy these different renditions, and if you enjoy musicals, then this is equally worth a listen.

The show must really go on and on!
I have watched this show twice when it has been on in Manchester in recent years. I admit the first time the show was much better (the one that had Curly Watts from Corrie in) But as a long term Queen fan the music from this show did not disappoint.Sure it's no real thing. But how many bands out there have tried and failed? Far too many and few will ever emulate what one man could do.I believe this was recorded from a London cast so the songs were obviously sung by different people to the show I had seen. But that didn't really disappoint.Only the Good Die young was the unfamiliar song to me but enjoyed just the same.Probably more for the fans who have seen the show than fans of the Queen band. This item was bought as a gift but still enjoy listening to now and then.

It Rocks
First of all, anybody who writes "but its not Freddy" or "I expected Queen". This is based on the music of Queen (and endorsed by Queen). The lyrics have been changed for many of the songs but it works. This is basically a story which uses the music of Queen to tell the tale. I saw this a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Audience participation is a must and if you don't find yourself tapping your feet or clapping your hands, there is something sadly wrong. Incidentally the guys aren't trying to be Queen or Freddie Mercury, they are singing to the best of their abilities though and do a fantastic job.You will love this.

"We Will Rock You" - Original 2002 London Cast
A Very good CD - Original 2002 London Cast of stage production, recorded live at the Dominion Theatre in 2003, not to be confused with the CD by the same caste which was recorded over three performances of the actual show. Both are great reminders of this terrific show, but I must be honest, when I play it, good as it is, I prefer to listen to the genuine article, i.e: QUEEN including Freddie Mercury singing, playing the majority of these numbers.
