My new favorite Collings book
I should have left this review a couple of weeks ago, but life got in the way. I loved this book. For the grammar conscious, I didn't notice any typos, extraneous punctuation marks, wrong words, wonky shift changes, etc. The story flowed without any odd moments where I felt the internal logic failed or where I thought characters were acting against their established personalities. The character development progressed naturally and well. There were two despicable people who filled villain roles nicely in addition to the good old fashioned monster. The other people ranged from people I would like as friends to the type you look at and think "Um, just not sure about you."It was fun "watching" the characters deal with both the undersea and air-breathing menaces. I will admit this book hit a few of my fears. I have a phobia of deep water that ties into my phobia of being stuck in a place where the air supply is limited and/or easily cut off. Add in the claustrophobia, which was stirred up whenever the sunken shipwreck was mentioned, and this story hit me in a visceral, undeniable, delicious way.The story started off with an ordinary trip to go deep sea diving, and segued into a life-or-death struggle with an ancient evil. There was a lovely romance, some heartbreaking moments, a few wonderful come-uppances, and some creepy, icky, and a few down-right frightening moments. I love horror, whether it's a good book, a well-done movie, a competent haunted house... horror is just a medium that I thoroughly enjoy (when it's well done). Mr. Collings is a master of horror. He has become an auto-buy for me. I know I can always count on him for a well-written, ably plotted, enjoyable trip into horrorville. I highly recommend this book. I think it's become my favorite Collings book, which is why I recommended it to a rabid reader friend who's opinion I value. Thanks for the great read and keep up the great work, Mr. Collings!

Thoroughly enjoyable and creepy
Michaelbrent has a way of rapping his way through a story at a pace that literally leaves you breathless and exhaust d when he's done. That works for his story lines. But this book was different and rightly so. While creepy, spooky and tension filled, it took place in the ocean where time slows. Likewise he slowed the pace of his action just enough to allow the reader to appreciate the setting and circumstances. There is all the imagination, creativity and horror one has come to expect from Mr. Collings. You won't be disappointed.

Fast paced horror
This was a good fast paced horror-thriller book that left me on the edge of my seat and staying up past my bed time. The characters were well written and the story line was just complex enough that I was unable to predict everything that happened. Although there as a few very obvious foreshadowing parts, overall the main question was still: What strange danger lies beneath the surface of the ocean?

Solid Story
I've read quite a few books in this genre. Some of them are good. Others don't quite hit the mark. This was one of the good ones. A solid story of terror that kept me reading. Believable with the science and how things are done. My only gripe is the author's tendency to split sentences with the thoughts of the characters. It's okay to do a few, but the whole book is riddled with them. Not only do they lose their impact, but they also become tedious. Other than that, though, it was a good read!

More gory deep-sea-creature fun
I read and loved another title from him, The Apparition, so I checked out The Deep as well. I liked it, but not as much…to briefly summarize, the protagonist (Sue)’s sister (Deb) went missing on a dive, and our heroine sets out to find her! Along for the ride are her estranged father, a couple of nice guys, a beaten-down woman, and a couple of very suspicious, shady guys you know are gonna cause trouble down the line. Of course, not long afterwards, they all find that something very evil, creepy, and decidedly non-human–in fact, like nothing they’ve ever seen before–is waiting for them at the dive site, ready to consume them like it consumed Sue’s sister!First, the good: The characters are extremely well-drawn. I really ended up liking Sue and her love interest, Tim, along with their friend Jimmy and Sue’s estranged father, Cal. The villainous characters are even better, though–I’ll not spoil who it is, but suffice to say Collins’s glimpse into the mind of a self-centered psychopath is perhaps the most convincing of any I’ve read. But the bad…well, there’s not much *too* bad, to be perfectly fair. If this is one of your first “horror at sea” novels, you’ll be reasonably pleased, but if you’ve read a few of them like I have, this story will seem a little by the numbers. Again, I’ll try to avoid spoilers, but the evil deep-sea beastie is quite frightening, and there are some very scary and graphic scenes of it doing its evil monster thing, but it’s not exactly original. I found its operation to be kind of similar to the creature from Paul Cooley’s “The Black” series, though its true nature is a little different. Again, I’ll be vague to avoid spoilers, but Collins never divulges the beast’s true identity–which is good, that sort of ambiguity suits a horror novel–so we’re never exactly certain what it looks like exactly, what exactly it wants, or whether it’s supernatural or a “science-fiction” kind of creature. Still, like I said, it’s shocking enough, so I gave it 4 stars.

Horror the way it should be!
This is the first time I've read a Michaelbrent Collings book, even though I've seen many reviews of his works on Goodreads. And boy, am I glad I read it. I loved this book. The premise behind a group of people on a diving expedition, each with their own agenda, and running into trouble, seems so simple. But the range of characters within that group is what keeps it interesting.Written in short, sharp chapters, each from the point of view of each character, is very well done. I won't delve into what each character does, because that would just spoil the fun of watching the development of each one as the story progresses. Add to this some decent supernatural horror, and this book is a winner.I can't wait to read more of Collings' work. A strong 4 stars.

Aquatic horror, of sorts!
The idea was good but its execution left a lot to be desired. The characters were all one dimensional, something along the lines of the good, the bad and the ugly. That said, however, there was plenty of action and the story moved along at a fast pace. How to sum up the book - aquatic zombies on the rampage, mother nature's revenge or a mishmash of both? An interesting but rather shallow tale.
