Not ready for prime time
I recently purchased an OWC Express 4M2 and was really excited about the nvme ssd speeds, so decided to buy an external drive for my personal use. I'm an audio engineer and frequently transfer large sessions back and forth between work and my personal computer, and the speed was compelling for transfers, as well as being able to run sessions directly from an external drive.Unfortunately after a couple weeks of use this is going back. First of all... it's MASSIVE. At least twice as heavy as any other SSD I've owned for years. And if you know what size an nvme drive is... it's adding a good 20x more weight to the drive itself -- maybe more. They're SSDs so I don't understand why SO much protection is necessary.Second, and MUCH more importantly, its use is so limited as to be nonfunctional. Most of my work computers don't have thunderbolt 3 ports, so I bought a female thunderbolt to male USB adaptor, which this drive won't work with. (This was purely for transfers -- speed would not have been an issue.) This wasn't *quite* to dealbreaker territory. Then I also have a CalDigit TS3 thunderbolt 3 dock for use at home so I can just plug my computer in and work with all my peripherals, and it won't work with that either -- it needs to be plugged directly into the computer. Also not a dealbreaker. The last straw was that tonight, while traveling, I have a USB dock with a keyboard and mouse plugged into one thunderbolt 3 port and plugged this drive into the other (MBP 2017 on Mojave), and it wouldn't mount the drive until everything else had been unplugged. So its use as a work drive is now completely eliminated. The last thing to mention that was on my radar but ultimately not a factor in whether I kept the drive or not was the short, non-removable thunderbolt cable. For a drive that's supposed to be okay with wear and tear and can't work with accessories, I was quite nervous about the longevity. Cables hanging off of drives tend to get beat up in the long run.I hope the tech and design advances to make this more useful in a real-world professional workflow where conditions are not always totally ideal, but at the moment this is just a brick in my backpack that occasionally, under the exact right conditions, can transfer files quickly. And that's not at all useful enough to warrant the price tag or hassle.

This thing smokes!
Transferring megabytes even hundred megabyte files happens so fast that I don’t see the common progress bar on the screen. This thing smokes !! Considering the speed and the price, this is a good deal for a thunderbolt 3 device! The only thing that could be improved to be a longer cable or a cable that could be removed. But that would likely increase the cost. The short cable requires the device to be right next to the computer. Sometimes when I move the computer, the cable connection to the computer is interrupted and I get a warning from my MacBook Pro that the device was improperly disconnected. So, I recommend using this with a computer on a table and not on one’s lap. All this said, I’m very pleased with this device. The transfer speeds are mind blowing!!

The integrated cable IS long enough to sit the drive on the base of a 2019 27" iMac
When I first plugged it in, the setup software flashed on the screen but disappeared before I could get to it. After the third try, I was fast enough to catch it, setup the drive, and relocated all of my music, videos and photos from internal storage.I have had it for 1 month, on 24/7 - no problems to date. Runs cool.Nice package with rugged bumper. AND OWC support.

Blazingly Fast
I haven't had a lot of time to work directly off this device but I can say that undoubtably this is the fastest external I've ever used. I have a 2019 MacBook Pro and recently copied a 6 GB file to the OWC -- it copied over in about 5 seconds. The same file copied to an older USB-C drive in about 90 seconds. It's not even close. I'll have to see how things go when it comes to working directly off the drive but so far I'm very satisfied.

This drive works perfectly on my M1 MacBook 20 2020 13 inch
So far I don’t see any issues, I am using this drive on my 2020 M1 MacBook and it works completely perfect. I’ve seen some reviews saying that this drive has issues but I haven’t seen anything.

Great product.
Although it can be used for general storage I bought this specifically for dedicated backup for my iMac specifically choosing an SSD drive for that purpose for its advantages. Additionally I've used other OWC external drives previously and they've worked well so I specifically went with OWC.

Really speeds up virtual machines!
I used this drive to house my virtual machine that I do development on. I used to run off of a standard USB 3 HDD and the performance was painful. At this point, I can hardly tell that I am on a virtual machine. I wish the cord was detachable.

Great Thunderbolt 3 SSD
I have used this as an external boot drive for my mac. It works flawlessly (so far) even when running Yosemite. Not much else to say really, it a fair price for the capacity and runs as expected.

Slower than Expected
The drive booted up fine and formatted easily with my mac mini, which is being connected with a thunderbolt 2 cable into an Apple thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter and than into a thunderbolt 3 dock. The drive took about 10 hours copy 650gb of files and the max read and write speed I could get out of it was 1250mb/s. The applications loaded onto the drive struggled to open more than my old non thunderbolt ssd and when they are running for long periods of time (over two hours) has been prone to randomly disconnect from the mac. I was specifically working with audio in ableton live and video in adobe premier pro when I experienced the random disconnects.
