ARF! ARF! presents two new doses of mind altering '60s psychedelia! This pair of CDs, packaged in colourful 12-page booklets (each over 77 minutes in length!) feature an in depth look at two varieties of Way-Cool Psychedelia. A HEAVY DOSE OF LYTE PSYCH focuses on the more melodic and well-produced material while AN OVERDOSE OF HEAVY PSYCH showcases over-the-top, fuzzed-out masterpieces. Excessive guitars, wild effects and tripped-out lyrics all produce magical and imaginative music from this by-gone era.

ERIC SHOULD REALLY REMASTER THESE
I like this series. It's some of the best music ever reissued on CD. However, it was stepped on too hard with the noise reduction. Everything sounds too flat and one dimensional. I bought most of this series because I liked the music so much, so I don't want to slam it too hard. However, I am disappointed. Eric should sit down and listen to Pebbles to compare the sound he aught to get. Also, just in passing, I'm not that wild about the remasters of Back From The Grave. I think the frequencies were driven up too high.

Good mix of Psych light
Nice collection of late 60's pop psych, not as heavy as Arf Arf's other dosages of psych. In fact, comparing it to the other albums is why I gave it only four stars. The other albums are more to my liking. Still, there were six out of the compilation that I really like: the organ and piano intro in "Land of Diana" finishing with trailing vocals; the haunting "Evolution" with occasional searing guitar lead; organ, guitar, and background insane asylum laughter in "Fifth Class Mail" that is the most psychedelic of the bunch; "Venus" easy instrumental that sounds like it should be in the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album; and my favorite "Mystery Track" with the slow piano and harmonica including Jefferson Airplane type vocals. The rest of the cuts sound too much like Beatles' Sgt Peppers experimentation to me, but still pretty good. This the beginner album for the label's Psych series. Great packaging with trippy artwork and decent liner notes.

'Heavy Dose Of Lyte Psych' (Arf! Arf!) Various Artists
Ah, one more of these must-own various artists CD titles on the Arf! Arf! label that almost got away from me - every bit as mind-shredding as 'A Lethal Dose of Heavy Psych' and 'Overdose Of Heavy Psych' {see my reviews of both}. For a couple of somewhat familiar names, check out tunes by Misty Wizard, the Tea Company, The Gurus - see my review of their 'The Gurus Are Here' disc, Wild Flowers (is this a possible early Alice Cooper track?), The Chimps and a couple of songs each by Chris Carpenter and the outstanding Crescent Six. Essential - in every sense of the word.

Great psych comp
This is quality product for those interested in obscure late 60's psychedelic music -- great packaging, informative liner notes, and (most importantly) uniformly good material from the various groups. Some highlights: a proto-techno rethinking of the blues classic "Baby please don't go" by Ballroom, Chris Carpenter's insane "This world is closing in on me," JK & Co.'s achingly beautiful "Fly," wanna-Beatles Wildflowers' "More than me," and The Fourth Way's "The far side of your mind," which was described by someone as sounding like soundtrack music from Barbarella. Cool.

A solid collection, as good as any
I have about ten CDs of rare psych compilations and a system of rating each track. This compilation is excellent. Like such compilations, don't expect to be immediately tripped out by each track. However, there are almost no truly weak tracks here. Some aren't stereotypically "psychedelic", but they are all enjoyably packed full of distinctive character, whether melancholy, haunting, odd, or offbeat. Also get the more stereotypically heavy-psych companion: "An Overdose of Heavy Psych". I strongly and confidently recommend both.
