Nice clear image and sound....
Enjoyable light comedy, classic black & white movie. I love mermaids and the sea. William Powell always has that certain something with comedy. Charming and enchanting and funny! (People who can't handle images of cigarettes, who have an addiction to them, should steer clear.) Thank you for this lovely movie on dvd!

A Hidden Piwell Gem
William Powell is a favorite of mine. This whimsical tale of fantasy written with a lesson in life and marriage is still applicable with today's issues- the want of unconditional love, an ear without rebuff, and an escape from trivial matters that seem to destroy the day. This was a well made blueray of the movie, no subtitles, but clear audio. Beautifully filmed. Totally pleased.

Still Magical After All These Years
This little gem was the predecessor of movies like "Splash" and "Aquamarine", and is equally charming and entertaining. The difference is that in "Mr. Peabody", it's impossible to tell if the unlikely love affair is merely the creation of a middle-aged, dissatisfied man's imagination. Early films left much to the viewer's imagination and discrimination, and this is no exception. Mr. Peabody is on an island holiday, recovering from an illness which coincides with his fiftieth birthday, which in those days marked the end of a man's virility. His loving, attractive wife, doesn't really understand how critical this time is for her husband, and dallies with a romance while Mr. P is pursued by an aggressive young singer. In an emotional pressure-cooker, our hero accidentally hooks a beautiful young mermaid while fishing, and can't help reciprocating her innocent and unconditional love. Although the viewer is sympathetic to his well-meaning wife, it's easy to understand the appeal of a creature who renews his sense of youth and romance. In short, this isn't a silly mermaid movie; it's funny, touching and even thought-provoking.

I've Got The BD Version 😊
Maybe I'm just lucky. I've read a lot of the reviews and some were not too satisfactory. My copy was excellent. Not exactly Blu-ray quality but certainly close to HD. I am totally satisfied with it and have no complaints. 👍

and I'm very pleased. Movie Quality
My review of Olive Films (yes, thru Paramount) Blu-ray of Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid:The reason why I've not given this 5 stars is for those who skip 5-star reviews - I believe they should consider this.I purchased this Blu-ray primarily for the movie, and I'm very pleased.Movie Quality: very good - I'm definitely not complaining. I'm unsure that copy was made from the original negative, but the picture is very clear and pleasing, as is the sound. However, for those who expect a pristine copy re-mastered from the original negative - no: though the print (whether from negative or standard copy) of this 1948 b/w film is pleasing and clear, on close examination the movie has not been restored or cleansed of what I consider minor imperfections.Positives: Olive Films Blu-ray is produced thru Paramount. Menu opens directly to movie or scenes - No movie previews - No other menus. Title Repeat - Disk has title repeat! - great for continuous play or napping.Negatives: For the price, some may complain that the film has not been re-mastered. No special features - no commentary. Scene menu is miniature and does not appear to open in larger view. This is not boxed as a Blu-ray/DVD combo. One last positive - Paramount could have released this in only DVD-R format. I'm extremely thankful they didn't.Thank you, Olive/Paramount! for this long awaited release; thank you, Amazon! for speedy Prime delivery.

Review of the new DVD
It seems many are reviewing the film from the videotape or some other source, so I will comment on the new DVD. I have the regular version, not the Blu-Ray. It is terrific. The transfer to DVD was done perfectly in both video and sound quality. I saw it recently on TV and this new DVD is much better, a beautiful black and white film. I agree with the high rating nearly all gave it too. I saw it in my youth and was thrilled to see it come out on DVD. It is a little pricey but worth it, as I said, because of the quality. It is a timeless movie, a fantasy but with some deeper layers as well, kind of like "One Touch of Venus" in that regard. Fantasies sometimes reveal deeper longings and deeper meanings. Enjoy!!

Let's hear it for Ann Blyth
Many of the other reviews talk of how great William Powell is as Mr Peabody, but consider how difficult it is to portray a full range of emotions without saying a single word. Ann Blyth, as the mermaid, does a superb job, especially considering her age when she made this movie. For those who like fantasy and old movies, this is a MUST SEE.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES
When l was a little girl l fell in love with this movie. Years later l was able to find it on T.V. in a colorized version and l recorded it. Now it's on DVD and only in black and white. But I he black and white movie is crisper and clearer to view. Too bad colorization makes the picture a little less focused. But, it was nice to see a colorized version of one of my favorite movies.

I really like this one
Log before Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah in Splash you had William Powell and Ann Blyth. And it is worth talking a look at this one for it's a real tall "tail" about a married man turning 50 and a mermaid that doesn't say a word - but says a lot and gets the husband in a lot of "deep water" with his wife, I really like this one. Movies are great when you can enjoy them over and over again.

Le chant des sirènes
Une superbe comédie romantique de 1948, en noir et blanc, pour amateurs de vieux classiques. Des acteurs dans le style de l'époque, pur plaisir.Attention pas de version française, ni sous-titres FR.

Que?
Despite the "product details" saying this was an English version with Spanish & English subtitles, my copy was a Spanish version with no subtitles.... so be wary unless you speak Spanish!?

good mermaid film
Dated but good film about man having a mid-life crisis. Meets a mermaid who crushes on him. His wife thinks he's having a nervous breakdown and sends him to a psychiatrist. Good acting, some humor and drama. If you're a collector of mermaid films (like I am), you'll want this in your collection. Not sure if you want your kids to watch it, since it involves husband and wife flirting with affairs. It's more adult-themed but there's no nudity or implied sex.
