Hindi-English Bilingual Visual Dictionary (DK Bilingual Visual Dictionaries)

So, I already owned the ebook of this book but I wanted a physical so I could push myself to actually use it more often as I SLOWLY learn Hindi. I would say I totally regret this but and prefer the ebook. The physical copy is the size of my palm. Which may be convenient for me it’s just not my personal preference. The words are so tiny and I already wear reading glasses. Nonetheless nothing is wrong with actually dictionary but I’m shocked I paid $17 for a pocket size dictionary.

A good reference book on the subject and good price.

This is my first DK Visual Dictionary. It is a great idea--it's a lot easier for me to memorize new vocabulary if I have a picture with which to associate it. Also, I'm still learning the Devanagari (Hindi) Alphabet, so the transliterations are quite helpful. However, like some of the reviewers of the Mandarin dictionary said, the pictures in this and some of the vocab are rather irrelevant. For example, western dishes and western clothing are not the most useful words to learn in Hindi. It seems that if I want to find Masala, Chapati, Sari, or Salwaar Kameez, this dictionary will not have it. It is a good series because it uses the same pictures in each book (and therefore makes it easier to learn multiple languages), but clearly with a Western language basis, Eastern languages are less relevant.I would give it 4 stars because it is a wonderful dictionary: great pictures, a wealth of vocab (a huge variety!--from automobile parts to architecture to animals), conveniently-sized ~400 pages and can fit in my purse, grammar review and and other common words at the end. However, the lack of specific words of the culture is rather disappointing. Also, there are mostly nouns and adjectives, and not many verbs. Where is the 501 Hindi verbs when you need it?All in all, I'm very very glad I got it :)

This is a great visual dictionary. I have never seen anything quite like it with so much detail. There are more words in here in Hindi than I would ever care to know. Some words I don't even know in my own language. There is practically everything under the sun that you can think of from something as simple as boy to as technical as particular structures, bones, and systems of the body for instance. HOWEVER, the downfall to the dictionary and the reason I did not give it 5 stars is the lack of any cultural terms. Everything is very westernized as another reviewer has said. When you look under women's clothing its all westernized. There is no inclusion of the word for saaRii for instance that women traditonally wear. Also, another thing that kind of takes away from the feel of the book is the generic photographs. They are very colorful and detailed, however none of them include people from India. I think it would improve the book if they used cultural references and showed actual places/people in India for the visual aid. This would make it much more exciting for the learner. All and all though what a great book with SO MANY WORDS you can learn!!!

Had to give this 4 stars because my Hindi speaking Partner told me one of the Hindi words was mispelled. I was also disappointed that all the numbers were not in the book. It gives 30, 40, 50 etc. but not 31, 32, 33, etc. Overall this is still a good book. If you download the App you will have audio for each page in the book which is so wonderful. I really like that feature.

Pictures are very western, for instance the police man is wearing the typical uniform one finds in the US, instead of the khaki. What is the use of Pictures then? Other than that the organization is good

The problem with this Hindi vocabulary book is that it is a template, picture book used by the publisher for multiple languages where nothing is different except the labels. Clearly, they have a bunch of pages pictures and then they label each item in the picture in French, German, Spanish, or in this case, Hindi.But it's not very useful for a Hindi learner to read that the English baseball term "left field" is "left fild'" in Hindi., or that "pitcher" is "pichar" They don't have baseball in India! Likewise, "hot dog" is "hot dog". Because Hindi uses so many English loan words, nearly half of the vocabulary is useless. And you would never see a beef or pork in India, while we're on the the subject of food, nor a strapless dress most likely.The book is completely culturally illiterate in other ways, For example, the word "uncle" has four different words, depending on how the person is your uncle (mother vs. father's side and blood vs. marriage). There are many areas where the book is misleading. A few where the vocabulary words are secondary usages rather the most common term for an item.I gave the book a second star because in fairness half of it is useful and the roughly four-page appendix of commonly used phrases and participles/antonyms is very good.

What an awesome dictionary! This book will truly help me on my journey to becoming fluent in Hindi! The photos make it so much easier to remember words.

A very good dictionary. But the pages are pretty small. Wish it was a bigger format

Learning everyday language...but very disappointed it was not the audio version as I had purchased quite a few of this type and all but this one and Japanese version had audio app

ce dictionnaire est très riche et me convient pour la pratique de la lecture mais le choix du vocabulaire est trop international et n'est pas assez spécifique de la culture indienne (les aliments, les vêtements, les légumes, les animaux, le restaurant, les types de pains, les ustensiles de cuisine spécifiques, ...).de plus, je peux comprendre que les indiens utilisent de nombreux mots anglais à la place de mots qui pourtant existent en hindi, mais ce n'est plus du hindi mais du hinglish.de la même façon que je peux critiquer les français qui utilisent des mots anglais alors que le vrai mot français existe pour dire la même chose, je critique l'usage de l'anglais quand un mot hindi existe.ce dictionnaire a choisi la facilité internationale mais pas la culture du hindi.un gros défaut de ce dictionnaire : il indique "free audio app". c'est vrai l'application est gratuite et je l'ai installée sur mon téléphone, mais elle ne fonctionne pas et les nombreux commentaires sur le site des applications (play store android) sont tous d'accord : il est possible de télécharger le fichier des prononciations mais impossible de l'installer ni donc de l'utiliser.j'ai écrit à l'éditeur du programme, j'ai écrit à l'éditeur du livre mais aucune réponse depuis plus d'une semaine, même pas un accusé de réception de mon e-mail. il n'y a personne du côté du destinataire.je suis très déçu car je souhaitais améliorer ma prononciation.mon commentaire est très négatif mais j'ai mis quand même 3 étoiles car le livre n'est pas cher (j'ai payé 11 euros) et il me permet quand même de pratiquer la lecture.

Wir haben das Buch gekauft, um mit unserem indischen Patenkind auch durch Bilder kommunizieren zu können. Wir schicken einzelne kopierte Buchseiten mit unseren Briefen mit, damit das Kind die Begriffe auch auf Hindi lesen kann. Dafür ist das Buch nur bedingt geeignet. Manche Abbildungen sind ungeeignet, um unser Leben/unsere Kultur zu erklären. Manche Themen sind nur sehr dürftig thematisiert. Aber ein besseres Hilfsmittel ist uns andererseits nicht bekannt. Deshalb geben wir vier Sterne.
