Wilderness Medical Society Practice Guidelines for Wilderness Emergency Care

Excellent Reference
This book gives a wealth of information and guidelines, is light-weight and easy to carry, and makes an excellent gift for an outdoorsman's emergencies. I gave it to a hunter friend, who really likes it and keeps it in his truck. Then I had to go buy myself another on the subject. With luck, we will never need these, but then the definition of an emergency is that you don't know it is coming or what you will need. I respect the knowledge of these authors, and their ability to communicate such.

This is a book written BY medical professionals FOR medical professionals
I do NOT recommend this book to the layperson, if you are heading out for a multi-day hiking trip this is NOT the book to get.The book is filled with unexplained medical jargon which completely obscures the meaning unless you know what the terms mean.Chapter two (heart) is particularly jargon-dense and near unusable, typical sentences:"PVCs or PACs usually are sign of ischemia or infarction and occur early in course of ACS.""Syncope with sudden bradycardia: Sign of heart block and inferior and right ventricular infarction. There are chapters that are somewhat comprehensible - obviously written by somebody other than chapter twos author but still I do not recommend this book unless you are a medical professional.

The Standard of Care
This is not a textbook; plenty of those are available. However, if you already know something about emergency medicine or EMS - you're a doctor, nurse, CRNP, PA, or R.N. with emergency experience, or an EMT or a paramedic - this is the definitive guide to how to modify your practice when in the wilderness/disaster/tactical setting. For that use, it is highly recommended.

Excellent guide to WHAT ANY medical practitioner should be able ...
Excellent guide to WHAT ANY medical practitioner should be able to do in the back country regardless of training. It is out of date as they now have it online once you join WMS. I prefer this format, easy to carry and digest.

For Professionals
A good collection of wilderness medical concerns. Includes discussion of peer review, pathology, intervention, and controversies surrounding each topic. Allows for room to grow given a limited body of science; not black and white protocols, but a good review of guidelines.

WMS Guidelines
Purchased this book to compare various Wilderness First Aid protocols. The book was thorough and covered a majority of the areas I wanted to research. Overall, a good source of information for anyone looking to write their own program.

basic info
This is pretty basic info. My guess is that if you are interested enough to buy the book, you already know what it says.

While it has some great information for the first aid practitioner
Using this book for a wilderness first aid course. It is very informative. While it has some great information for the first aid practitioner, it is set up for medical practitioners who have the ability to carry prescription drugs with them.

Outdated
This is now extremely dated. The current practice guidelines are available online from the Wilderness Medical Society
