Family favorite
My 8 grands love this book. It is a sweet story of the love between a grandmother and grandson who live far apart. Kids see that there are other ways to communicate in addition to using words.

Sweet Halmoni story for our Korean-American son!
I just came back to order a second copy of this book to send to my Korean mother-in-law as a gift. Our son loves this book and I wanted to send some of his drawings with this so that his far-away grandparents can start to write back. The story chronicles a little boy in America writing to his halmoni (grandmother) in Korea through pictures, and her writing back in Korean with other objects that help him guess what she means. I appreciate the Korean perspective as there aren't a lot of books in English geared towards Korean or Korean-American toddlers or preschool/kindergartners. The illustrations and words are both beautifully created, and I know we and my mother-in-law will treasure this book and the memories we'll create by following a similar example!

Such a wonderful book
Love this book so much. A great story with a palpable sense of both family connection and the way in which little children have their own private inner world and wonderings. We love it and bought a copy for our son's preschool, too.

Love this book
I used this book as part of a multicultural writing lesson for a kindergarten class. The kids loved it! It is a sweet story and beautifully illustrated. It generated insightful discussion, writing, and drawing from the students.

Sweet book about a picture-based story telling/relationship between a child ...
Sweet book about a picture-based story telling/relationship between a child and his grandma. Encourages kids to see relationship in a different way. Wish it was a tad longer book. Thought it was too short, even for a kid's book. Good for age 3 and up.

A classic book that came out before culture specific books were trending
I read Soyung Pak’s book in the 90’s before I had kids- I had never seen a children’s book written by A korean American about the experience of a korean American child growing up in America. This book was groundbreaking and engaging to read, and the poignant illustrations added to its charm. Highly recommend!

Great story to share with grandchildren
Illustrations are great. First read this story in school. Grandparents have a special relationship with their grandchildren. Soyung Pak weaves this relationship beautifully.

A Good Read!
I appreciate being reminded of how special it is to still communicate using the regular mail. In this day and age of technological advances, going back to the basics could bring back memories of yesteryears when things were simpler, and yet, meaningful.

This story is great for any children with long-distance grandparents
This is a lovely story about a little boy who gets creative to "write" a letter to his Korean grandmother. This story is great for any children with long-distance grandparents, or for any pre-literate children with emerging communication skills.

Great book!
This is an excellent book for Kindergarten and grade 1 teachers to use as a mentor text for writing, and I think it's also a really beautiful book.
