An Almost Forgotten Harlem Renaissance Sculptor
A wonderful look at the life of an almost forgotten sculptor. I saw Augusta Savage's work at the Hampton University Museum in Hampton, VA. I loved the piece 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' so much I purchased this book to teach my daughter more about her life. She was a Harlem Renaissance artist who started off building figures with the rich Florida clay she grew up around. She was discouraged by her hard working father, but she never lost her love of sculpting. I highly recommend this story to young artist, specifically African American artist who may rarely see accomplished African Americans working in the arts. Mrs. Savage is also famous for being a teacher in her field she wanted to give back and encouraged children to love the arts just as much as she did. Mrs. Savage is gone but no forgotten. I highly recommend this book.

I'm disappointed. I thought there would be more about the injustice done to her by various arts institutions over time. That is a big part of her story that is missing here.

A beautiful story and given to a friend who met the sculptor early in her life. This book arrived quickly and filled a good need

Mixed response
The story is compelling but the illustrations leave something to be desired-especially in a book about an artist. The figures are not accurately rendered and do not appeal.
