Pocket Companion: A Tavern Guide: A Handy Tabletop RPG Guide

Useful and fun
This is a small, A6 size book detailing a number of fantasy taverns. Typically no more than a double page spread is given to each tavern so you get a good number of settings. However many are very similar (run by an ex adventuring party is very common) so there is a lot of duplicated material. The book is split into chapters, separating taverns from a couple of locations (city, wilderness ect) but not by climate or region. This is important, because a few of the taverns are specific to environments, such as mountains or dense forest. There are a number of tables to help generate your own tavern name, signature drink, special features ect, but no random table to decide which of the taverns in the book to use if you suddenly need one. That said it's size makes it easy to flick through, stopping at random and using that page. All in all, for the price, it is a good purchase for regular DM's, especially ones whose parties travel a lot, though it will need a bit of work to get the most out of it.

Buy this
I’m a lifelong hombrew DM. I’ve got a number of published games but much prefer the freedom of homebrew. This book is an absolute gem for improvising when the party go the way you didn’t expect, with enough flavour and detail that you can use the contents as a pretty substantial basis for more planned adventures. None of the detailed stats and weapon skills nonsense that nobody actually cares about, just the setting, the characters and the important details that players actually remember! Thoroughly recommended

Bought as a present but they loved it
This was bought as a present for an avid DM. Having a quick flick through it after they received it and I think I need to get another one for me. It has lots of fully fleshed-out taverns and inns. Lots of interesting characters. If you are looking for tavern ideas or have players that are likely to run away from the plot into the nearest drinking establishment then this is the book for you.

Great for DMs
Been amazing to have on hand for sessions and during prep. Especially when my players decided one session to go on a tavern crawl!
