The Science of Fitness

Excellent read for anyone caring to be healthy
This has to be read by everyone! Young, old, mid age, athlete, obese, whoever... I am very glad I found this book. Thanks to the genetic uniqueness of Greg LeMond and scientific insight of Dr. Hom, this book presents a case of "ancient virus" - this was a very intriguing part - helping us thrive. This work explains the mechanisms of our body being sick, healthy, at the peak, and so much more. Great work, very-very useful insight! I will definitely re-read this, probably more than once.At times the doc gives some "deeper" biological and medical details, but it is so worth it to do additional research into these to understand the points he tries to deliver. You could skip these and still understand them, but, why not get more out of the work?Thank you for this work, Doctor, I will probably look for more of what you have to say.

Just another piece to the puzzle
It is a thin book for a lot of money but the information was decent. The medical author encourages high intensity interval training as a shortcut but for older folks, too much HIIT is too hard to recover from as he talks about increased frequency as well. Too much of HIIT can lead to metabolic inflexibility, injuries, increased stress-related problems...good stuff about Greg Le Monde...

A bit of a disappointment
I have been a fan of Greg for decades, but this book has more pseudoscience in it that I care to see in a book with the word "science" in the title. I am honestly disappointed that Hom tries to force his idea of mitochondrial multiplication through the book and then claims it is a unifying theme; it is not.

GREAT Science and TALL on specifics
If you are looking for specific advice on training, this is the perfect book for you. Obviously I disagree with the Dec 22, 2014 review. In 2009, I read Mike Stone's book Living with Restenosis (kindle) and was inspired by his story of bike riding to regain strength after a heart attack. I immediately began walking for exercise. I was still recovering from open heart surgery and not strong enough for a bike.Last summer I bought a LeMond stationary bike and ordered every out-of-print Greg LeMond book I could find and I thought this book was one of those gems from the 1980's. Amazon kept sending me notices that they could not get the book, did I want to cancel, a typical problem with out-of-print books, and I kept saying don't cancel keep trying. Then this book arrived, with a shocking publication date 2015, and I immediately ordered it on kindle. This is the missing piece for my training. I already have books about specific training regimens (including one by LeMond), but there is no way I can follow someone else's training plan. I am 67, 5 years out from open heart surgery, and riding a bike to keep the blood sugar down. And I was already trying to boost my mitochondria. Now I am better able to design a workout/eating plan to improve my fitness. Thanks Greg! Thanks Dr. Hom!This is not about winning the race, it's about surviving to get on the bike tomorrow.

Good Science but Short on Specifics
If you are looking for specific advice on training, this is not the book for you. On the other hand, if you have never explored the world of cellular biology and biochemistry, it is an excellent introduction. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of repetition and what seems like filler in this book. It's one redeeming feature is that it focuses on the one thing that is truly the bedrock of physical fitness: mitochondria. Basically, the more you have the better you will perform and the less likely you are to develop a lifestyle related metabolic disease.I was hoping for more from LeMond who, although he supplied his name and some good photos for the book, did not contribute much if anything to the writing. Still, Greg LeMond is the real deal: a cycling hero who deserves his place in the Pantheon of cycling heroes. If nothing else, I bought this book to support Greg LeMond and what he stands for!

Mighty-chondria
Great overview of training effects on mitochondria. Has helped me parse through all of the anecdotal training recommendations (long slow distance, HIIT, intervals, etc) by giving an underlying medical mechanism for how each of these changes endurance and performance. Very helpful.

Knowing What It Means To Be In Shape
Three-time Tour de France winner, two-time pro cycling world champion, and Science of Fitness co-author Greg Lemond has a great line about training, “It never gets easier, you just go faster”. Why? What goes on in our body that makes the difference between being in or out of shape? As an avid cyclist (6-7000 miles/year), man, I’ve wanted to know the answer to that question for quite a long time. The one word answer, as lead Science of Fitness author Dr. Mark Hom explains clearly and concisely, is mitochondria. As we train, specifically with aerobic/endurance activities, our cells create more numerous and more efficient oxygen and fuel converting mitochondria that then provide the energy needed to power our muscles and organs during sustained activity. The multiword answer is it that building – or losing – fitness is a process that involves just about every cell in our body. After reading Science of Fitness voraciously – and loving it – I’m very much looking forward to reading Mark and Greg’s more medically oriented follow-on book, Mitochondrial Fitness: The Science of Athletic Energy.Until then, though, I get a good smile out of knowing what it means to be in shape organ-by-organ and cell-to-cell, which motivates me even more to ride on!

Not good at all
Not good at all, in comparison to Greg's First book. In fact this book is not written by Greg at all.

Very well written
My husband and I are interested in this subject, since we are avid cyclists. It is very well written and extremely informative about the correct diet and exercise. Highly recommend this.

Although the content is good. Bit high priced
Although the content is good. Bit high priced. Cheap cover and illustrations . Bit wary of buying books through Amazon. Almost 30% of purchases are of cheap quality paper and cover.

Sry aber das ist Müll imho
Das liest sich als ist wäre nur Copy & Paste gemacht worden ... nichts wirklich relevantes & praktisches zum Anwenden...
