Mixed Blessing: A Children's Book About a Multi-Racial Family

excellent idea
This book was an excellent idea for educating all children about mixed race children and people. In fact, it's excellent for raising awareness about the differences among us altogether. I am from the Caribbean and the differences in our skin tones are too many to mention! I will defeinitely have my children read this. My only reservation was the part where the dad tells the son that he "outshines" the other children. I don't imagine the authour is suggesting that he outshines the others because he's mixed?! It tends to come accross that way, which I don't think is the right message. Apart from that, excellent read.

This books is awesome. Don't overthink it
This books is awesome. Don't overthink it. Its an affordable fun story about a mixed race family going to the zoo. My son loves the pictures and the story was easy to read. My 3 year old has memorized the story and reads it back to me, with the rhymes and all. Reading some of the negative reviews are so critical....really??? Its too old, its too young....maybe its just right....wait I've read that book too. Buy it for what it is, a great story about a mixed race family, and a mother telling her son that he is special no matter what other people say. The world is cruel and mixed race kids will have to deal with it...but for now, just have some fun with this book, written by a women who isn't a best selling author but had the courage and drive to write and publish it. Anyone rating this less than 5 stars I welcome them to write their own!

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
I ordered this to grow my collection of books that teach about diversity, loving ones self and having proper representation for my child and students. Upon receiving this book I was Absoultely mortified at what was inside. The book to me isn't age appropriate for preschoolers (ages 2-4) more like 5 and up and the pages at the end seem to suggest that being mixed was above anything or anyone else. It also seems to suggest that because 2 people that come from different culteral backgrounds make a superior child. It also talked about bullying and as I'm all for talking about bullying at any age again the way it was described in the book was more for 5 and up not 2-4 year olds. The book seemed all over the place in its explanation of what it means to be biracial. I feel like it missed several key points to help a child understand the meaning and to ultimately teach them to love themselves and the skin their in.There aren't many books that teach on these things and for the one book to be available I was sadly let down by the context inside. I want to return it but my child bent it so I'll honestly probably just throw it away, it truly bothered me that much.I would highly suggest not buying this book. I only gave it 2 stars because the illustrations were lovely. Again as a parent and an educator this book was not okay at all! If i can add pictures later I will.

I loved this book
This is the first book that I have seen with an African Am Mom and a Caucasian Dad. That is our story. My son was so excited when he saw the page with the parents. I said, "See...he is just like you." Then he looked at the book and smiled, then said, "That IS me!"

Caught me off guard
The mention of teasing and the cruel things children can say caught me off guard. Also, not really comfortable with the approach taken here. I like the emphasis on mixed race children being unique and special, and that we should embrace our differences. But I'm not so keen on explaining differences by blending ice cream flavors or saying mixing brown and white gives you beige. I was a little taken back by the author's approach. It's not the right book for me or my family, bit maybe it will appeal to others.

Not sure
An OK story, but comparing a mixed race child to ice cream feels a little off to me. I am still unsettled by this and as such I am going to return it. But much kudos to the writer for trying to provide a book for this market.

not what i was looking for.
Disappointed with this book. I was expecting a better story, Not about the colour of skin being matched with mixing ice cream.

Great message!
I felt this book had a wonderful message to children and parents born of mixed race. The author makes the message relevant to children so they understand & embrace their differences. Illustrations are great too!
