Psalms 1-72: Volume 22 (Volume 22) (New Collegeville Bible Commentary: Old Testament)

I got much of what I wanted from this commentary on Psalms 1-72, namely, some information on how to classify the psalms and relate one to another. I had expected, based on other commentaries I had read by Dr. Bergant, to find more about the history of each psalm, but on further reflection I recognize that that sort of analysis is far beyond what one ought to expect from this type of commentary, which is meant for general readers.The writing is clear and cogent, and these 72 psalms mean more to me now than they did before I finished the commentary.

This and the companion volume (Psalms 73-150) are an excellent primer on the structure and message of each Psalm conveniently arranged. I pray the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) daily based in large part on the Psalter so this an easy reference guide. I wish, as you will, that the lucid explanations were longer but that would likely defeat the purpose so I'll be ordering the two volumes of the OT Daily Study Bible series by Knight covering the Psalms next month. Worth every penny!

We have been using Collegeville Bible Commentaries for a number of years and find them very good. There is an information filled introduction, easy to use breaks in verses with great commentaries with many references to other pertinent verses, references to The Catechism of Catholic Church, and questions to use for review and/or discussion in the back of book. I can't imagine our Bible study without this series of commentaries.

This was exactly what I was looking for -- a book that would explain the psalms. I am really enjoying it.

Informative book. The more I read these commentaries the closer I am to understanding more of the Bible.

Diane Bergant is a wonderful author and her contribution to the Collegeville Commentay on the Psalms is excellent. I will use it in facilitating a class on the Psalms next year.
