A 1961 album that features both vibe player Milt Jackson and saxophonist John Coltrane, Bags & Trane was recorded at a time when Coltrane was about to exit Atlantic for Impulse Records. For that reason this particular album has long been considered part of Milt Jacksons catalogue, but there are compelling reasons for considering very much a joint effort. It was not the first album Coltrane had made as a co-leader (he recorded with Kenny Burrell in 1958, although this wasnt released until 1963), nor would it be the last, but it is fairly safe to say that this was the strongest and satisfying of his joint albums. Milt Jackson is no slouch, as his work with everyone from Ray Charles to Wes Montgomery would confirm. Here both artists complement each other to perfection, with fine back up being provided by Hank Jones, Paul Chambers and Connie Kay.

What Good Jazz Sounds Like
I’m more of a purist with jazz in that I’m not generally a fan of instruments beyond brass, piano, and the rhythm section. But this album has it all.It swings. It soothes. It is what jazz should sound like. The vibraphone rings in your ear, the sweetest of sounds.

Enjoyable recording
As usual with this type of this one meets that one, type of recordings, this probably isn't the best work of either player, but its quite good. I have a cassette tape of this around somewhere that I hadn't played in years and this was on my mind after I recently bought a CD of Milt Jackson and Cannonball Adderly. The Bags & Trane CD has a great rhythm section of Hank Jones, Paul Chambers (one of my favorite 1950s bass players) and Connie Kay, so its an all star lineup. Good solid performances by all. Interesting historically, at least to me, is that at the time of this recording, the big star was Milt Jackson and John Coltrane was getting to be well-known, but still sort of an up-and-coming guy to watch. If you like either of them, you won't be disappointed by this recording.

Product is Mislabeled
I bought this CD based on customer reviews and after auditioning the free audio samples on Amazon. When I received the product, the CD inside was different from what was described on the website. The actual CD was entitled "Los Piratas". I returned the product thinking that it was just a mistake on Amazon's part. When I received the replacement shipment, I got the same wrong CD. I filed for a refund request which Amazon promptly processed. I have purchased numerous items from Amazon over many many years and this is the first time this has ever happened. I recommend that Amazon management adopt and implement stricter quality control procedures for its merchandise.

Superb laid back jazz
I love Coltrane and despite his genius for invention I especially love his ballads and after hours stuff. This album is laid back, cool and superbly executed, and the combination of vibes and Coltrane makes for a brilliant combination even to those who find vibes a little formal. It is also another absolute bargain on the hallmark reissue label. That series has been a great find over the last few months, although I remember getting cheaper and less exciting albums on the label fifty years ago. Worth full price any day but at this price worth mixing with a few others and placing an order.

Sei stelle
