English with an Accent

Good for discussions and informative
Can lead to some great discussions! Lippi-Green can be a lil impractical at times but I think the purpose is just to show how ideology does shape our knowledge of language and to become aware of all this in order to move forward and I act some sort of change. This book is informative especially for people who are quite aware of the distinction between Standard American English and other English variations like AAVE.

Love it!
The seller has accurate descriptions of the product. It's brand new and has no damages, writings and whatsoever. The book is very helpful for my class (since this is our textbook) and it also talks about controversial issues regarding Language and Identity. If you are interested in Language and how this affects people in society, I highly recommend this book!

Great for those who disagree with her main points
Great book. What I appreciate is that the author really understands that many readers will take issue with everything she believes in. The notion that the way a person speaks is not indicative of their intelligence is something that many will struggle with. The author realizes this and never approaches the topic in a condescending manner, nor does she come off as holier than thou.Ultimately, if you have to read this book for a course and you do not agree with her assertions, stick with it and be assured that you will not be demonized. If you're like me, and most of what she says seems obvious, enjoy the read.

Great book. Written with relatively low readability
Great book. Written with relatively low readability. She defines any subject related vocabulary words. You can skip through the chapters to read on the topic you want.

You will learn so much!
I cannot say enough about this book and how awesome it is. It's been my most cited Linguistics book since 2009. Explores everything you could possibly imagine when it comes to accents. An excellent read.If only Dr. Lippi-Green would respond to our messages from UF so she could come and speak to us! It would be a dream come true.Buy this now.

It's not amazing, but it was required for one of my college courses. Not bad, but certainly not something I would read in my spare time!

A must read if you want to be a teacher!
When teachers enter the classroom for the first time we encounter students from diverse backgrounds. Students of color especially bilingual students are assume that they have nothing to contribute to the classroom. Lippi-Green discuss the fallacies and myth surrounding students who's first language is not English and the importance of mantaining that first language in order to learn English. The book is make us think about our own assumptions.

Fascinating academic read
Very interesting and comprehensive book. Very readable, for all levels. I bought it as a reference for my thesis. This is a subject that can be tricky for objectivity, and while other academics may be more discreet about their views, Green is not afraid to say where she stands, which I appreciate. I think any reader could become interested by this material; it's not just for those in the field.
