Why Im giving it 5 stars
I purchased the Hardcover version of this lovely little book.I have a number of reasons why I'm rating it so high. First, it's designed to be a keepsake item, the only breed specific book I've seen with such a personalized design layout. In the hardcover edition there's a place to write your Portie identification details, include pictures, and even vet/health notes. Its been many years since I've bought a "Kennel Club Book" but they didn't used to have this scrapbook layout which I enjoy. Next, this would make the ideal gift for a new Portie family. Its one of only 3 publications I've found on this breed, which until President Obama was considered a "rare" breed. I have all 3 in my library, but "Portuguese Water Dog" is the most enjoyable read, the most comprehensive for new owners of the breed and designed to last the lifetime of your new family member. Without demeaning the other 2, this is my favorite. They each have different slants. This little book is the most current and up to date for the twenty-first century. This book is so delightfully written it'll easily be shared by all of the family members aged 10 through 100. Throughout the 160pps, you'll find each have eye pleasing layouts containing colour photographs, diagrams or tables related to the text. The Content (which you can preview here at Amazon) truly covers most every topic you will need to thoroughly familiarize yourself with this breeds particular personality traits, sense of humor, daily demands, activity needs, physical, health, and life span characteristics. My top reasoning for 5 stars is this: A Portie is still an unusual dog breed, even if the upswing in popularity has caused its numbers to depart the"rare breed lists". No doubt this is a breed of dog which requires careful consideration and research prior to the commitment to cohabitation. This book provides the answers to a potential Portie persons questions, in an easy days' read. This alone equals "Must Have, First" status. The only criticism I could imagine is for the more experienced dog breeders, trainers, and handlers it might contain quite a bit of information already known to them. For just the pro's they'll look more to The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog (Howell reference books) Kathryn Braunds' classic 1997 The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog.If you're a family who has one or two Porties as new members, or considering Porties; Portuguese Water Dog by Paolo Correa is the one and only necessary guide to help you and your four pawed family members reach the level of understanding and quality of life for years of shared health, humor and joy.

An OK book
This is an accurate book, but is a typical PET STORE book with boilerplate sections on training, etc. It is, however, interesting to read a book on PWDs with a European viewpoint. It has some great photos of PWDs, but I wish they were identified with the name of the dog! This book is really for a person with little experience owning any type of dog. For the new or soon-to-be owner of a PWD puppy, I recommend Vern Foster's book, for those seeking in-depth information on the breed, the classic is The New Complete Portuguese Water Dog (Howell Reference Books) by Kathryn Braund. For those interested in the European viewpoint, get Carla Molinari's book (although it is HARD to find!)I recommend this book for those wanting general information on raising a puppy as well as information about the PWD. I also recommend it to those people who- like me- want to own EVERYTHING published about the PWD!

Portuguese Water Dog
This book is primarily a generic dog info book. Some helpful info but not very PWD specific. It is second rate at best compared to the book written by Kathryn Braund - The New Complete PWD. Buy Braund's book
