Something Beautiful

In my top 10 of the 3,345,768 things I love about Canada.
I love this GBS album so much that I bought a copy for my father. He loved it too. I can't imagine anyone not loving GBS and I wouldn't even know of them if it weren't for my regular trips to the great white North.Their music is Scotch/Irish sea shanties from Newfoundland when some pop thrown in, some polka, a little bit of everything and you'll like all of it. Give it a try, Americans!

Great Big Sea is the BEST band ever known to man!
:)First off, I would give this particular CD a ten-star rating, but since I am limited to five stars...I will award it five stars and continue on with the review. :)As the seventh installment of the BEST music ever, Something Beautiful is literally Something Beautiful!!! This CD is great...very upbeat and addictive, as the last six albums were. Seriously, any band that can bust out a song about 'beating a drum', 'seagulls' and 'donkey riding' and make you want to get up, sing along and dance any time of the day is ok in my books.I can only give you the "clearest indication" that on this "ordinary day", you should buy this album (and the 6 others - cuz they are all worth it!) and throw your troubles into the "sea of no cares" and sit back with your friend "Sally Ann" and enjoy the "consequence free" music of Great Big Sea!Oh Yeah! :)

Not as good as earlier albums, but an achievement anway.
Something Beautiful seems to describe the album perfectly -- not everything is beautiful, but a song or two is worthy of a spot on the inevitable greatest hits album that Great Big Sea will no doubt one day produce. The rest are all right: standard GBS fare, but nothing especially wonderful compared to their earlier work. Those songs that stole the album, though, are some of the best I've seen Great Big Sea produce: most notably "John Barbour," an adaptation of an old English ballad, and "When I Am King," a catchy song in the upbeat style of Up's "Run Runaway."Something Beautiful is not Great Big Sea's strongest album by any stretch, but it's still a worthy collection.

A Great BIG Pleasure
Being a fan in the UK, I discovered GBS when they supported Runrig on tour. Since then I have accquired all their albums, and this one was certainly worth the wait. In fact I would go so far to say it is their best yet. Starting with the rockier Shines Right Through Me and When I Am King, moving on to a cover of the aforementioned Runrigs "Pride Of The Summer" (here called Beat The Drum),a very different version too! The title track is a sumptuous ballad which then leads on to the folk-sounding singalong of Helmethead. Both Alan Doyle and Sean McCann have written some glorious songs for this album, Alans best being Sally Ann, Lucky Me and the title track, whilst Sean gives us pearls such as Summer, Somedays and the glorious Love. The album finishes off with the traditional foot-tapping tunes that are called Chafes Celidh. Overall a wonderful album that you wont regret buying!

Surf's Up!
Once again, the boys from the Rock, Newfoundland, have struck gold...there isn't a track that doesn't just smoke and with the addition of the two new guys...an even stronger sound...outstanding effort.
