Life-saver
This is a brilliant bit of kit. I had just bought a new LG TV for the kitchen and when unpacked I discovered it did not have an ordinary audi socket for a set of wireless earphones which I need to listen to the TV without deafening everyone else. Instead it had a digital audio port which I could not plug the earphone base station into. I searched long and hard for the solution, found no satisfactory help on the forums, so started a search on Amazon where I came up with this converter. It worked like a dream straight out of the box and was extremely easy to set up. I strongly recommend it for anyone who has the same problem with newer TVs.

Dreadful audio performance, doesn't meet published spec
The DAC didn't work at all when first plugged in, which was down to the awful quality of the optical cable supplied. Luckily I had a spare good quality optical cable and that got it working. I had bought it because I needed analogue audio out of my new LG TV to go to my rather elderly hi-fi. Listening to the TV speakers at the same time as the DAC through the hi-fi didn't sound great and I was concerned about the audio delay, so I tested it at work with professional test equipment.I wasn't expecting too much given that it only cost £9.99, but even so I was shocked at how bad it was. The seller claims that the frequency response is within 0.2dB from 20Hz to 20kHz, which would be amazing if true! The reality is that the output level drops off from 2kHz upwards, until it is over 3dB down at 10kHz and over 7dB down at 20kHz.Next I measured the phase between left and right, and that was even more shocking. Even at 1kHz there was a 7 degree phase error, and it increased with frequency to 75 degrees at 10kHz (see photo) and 150 degrees at 20kHz! That means that one channel is almost totally out of phase with the other at that frequency. It claims to support up to 192kHz sample rate, but that isn't entirely true either. It does if you use the coaxial input, but the optical input can only work up to 96kHz.There is a possibility that I had a faulty DAC, but Amazon's return policy is simply a refund, not a swap, and I didn't feel like buying and then returning another one if it was just the same.

This product was sound
I had recently purchased a new TV only to discover that for some "unexplained reason" at the time, my rather dated although perfectly serviceable surround sound theater system did not work despite being all plugged in and connected correctly. Upon asking some technically minded persons, they suggested that my theater system which produced Dolby 5.1 digital sound actually converted analog into digital, and that my television which is ultra modern produced digital sound. Unfortunately this was unreadable to the theatre system as it only received analog. What I needed was a product to convert the digital sound from the TV, back into analog so that the theatre system could converts it back into digital....cross eyed confused look upon my face....Hence the purchase of this product, which as I am giving it a 5 star review it works. I now have a superb television with superb sound all thanks to this device.

Brilliant - easy to install and solves the 'no headphone socket' on TV issue
The LG TV that was included with our media bed had no headphone socket and no bluetooth option. If I want to want TV in bed whilst my husband sleeps I need to use headphones. A bit of searching the internet for a solution suggested a DAC convertor box with TOSlink would easily solve my problem. I am not technically minded and was a bit concerned I wouldn't have a clue what to do but honestly - it was so simple to install. The most frustrating bit was trying to plug in the TOSlink optical cable. I thought it was a tight fit and I just wasn't able to do it. Another bit of internet searching advised the bit on each end of the cable that looks like a small bulb is in fact a rubber cover that needs pulling off and once that is done the cable fits beautifully. It would have been helpful if the instructions made this clear but I got there in the end. I'm using this box with a headphone splitter cable so that we can use two pairs of headphones. The splitter cable plugs straight into the DAC converter box - no need for any additional audio cables. Just one cable from TV to DAC box and the power USB cable and then plug in the headphone jack. I did go to the sound setting on my TV and select digital audio out. The headphones we are using have in line volume control - which is a must as the tv controller does not operate the volume once the DAC box is in use.

It works brilliantly!
I replaced my 6 year old Sony tv with a new LG larger screen. As I am somewhat hard of hearing, I used to connect a pair of wireless headphones to the Sony and then my wife could listen through the audio system whilst I could enjoy a comfortable volume through the headphones. This is no longer possible with the LG!Having spent quite some time trying to find a way to get round this problem (even seeking advice from the technical experts at John Lewis), as a last resort I thought I would risk the cost of this device to see if it would work when connected to my Bose Lifestyle system.I connected the optical cable supplied with the convertor, to the optical out on the Bose, the USB (again supplied) to the LG, and finally my headphones to the convertor. I switched on the tv with some doubt that it would work - but voila! it works brilliantly. Now I have a better sound in the 'phones from the Bose, and my wife can listen with the volume at a whisper.I couldn't be happier that this small and inexpensive device has transformed my tv experience. Thank you so very much.
