They feel firm and comfortable out of the box. I first tried them out camping in extremely wet grass and turning to mud. They proved to be very water proof and unexpectedly stain proof. My feet are 10.5 (and bought 10.5) but think a size 11 might be a better fit for me but maybe they'll loosen up after a while. Can't fault them though.
