Perfect for him is a 33' waist but I got him a 34' based on the reviews. Size is perfect if you size up just a hair. The material is super durable. They wear really well even after washing straight out of the bag he loved the fit too he didn't have to "break them in" like other Carhartt pants. I would say if you are stuck between these and the traditional pair I'd go with these of you don't want to have to break them in.
