Review: Great fuel tank, very durable construction, had to custom fit to 1968 tri-hull, but boat runs totally better ! - I could not find an origional Coast Guard Approved marine gas tank for my 1968 Johnson Seasport 155, so I decided to tripple measure the space available,and decided on this 12 gallon Moeller model. The origional cube metal tank held 15 gal, but rusted out. This tank fit in the origional location under the front bow seats deck, but I had to make an extra 1/2 foot longer wooden extension box to cover the tanks rectangular shape. The mounting clamps worked like a charm, the plumbing & wiring was straight forward----best of all, now the boats origional fuel gauge works, and wide open throttle--without starving out for fuel (per factory specs) are above 35mph as long as fuel lasts ! I can again, at a glance, do what I was taught while attending the Boating Safety course given by the U S Coast Guard; Use 1/3 of fuel to get there, 1/3 to get back & 1/3 in reserve ! Review: really well built Fuel Cell - Very nice fuel tank with great attention to detail on the filler and vent connections, vent fits 5/8" tubing. fill is a 1/4" npt connection. Comes with a fuel level float and sending unit. The hold down kit works great with this unit, I wire wheeled the hold down brackets to get rid of the sharp spots, mounts solidly in place. recommend 3 strips of rubber under the tank to stop potential rubbing. Like my main motor and my kicker/ trolling motor?** A: YOUR ONLY TWO concerns should be that the main fuel line must not be permitted to receive air and the tank vent must be very high relative to the tank. There are an infinite sneaky ways this can happen. Check valves are never totally reliable You can do your connection to both engines but you must shut one line off with a high quality valve such as the Moeller fuel valves.ONE ENGINE can steal fuel from the other if external fuel pumps are not involved. It is possible to run both engines from one source as long as there is an electric pump involved that will keep positive pressure on both within the constraints of the permissible line pressure. Kicker pressure is usually very low. Most outboards pressure is very low. Pumps output bottoms out at maybe 3 pounds which is usually too much. Pressure regulators are pitifully poor unless fuel is being used. The Moeller 3 way selector valve used backwards and selecting engines instead of tanks (backwards from intent) where it blocks off the engine not in use would work. AT NO TIME is a situation where air bleeding back from an engine pump or whatever is permitted into the fuel line. If that should be permitted no fuel will flow; only air. Most fuel pumps have check valves but a failed check valve might be the reason you are selecting the kicker. Search Moeller fuel tank selector valve and see what is there. You want a valve that allows you to choose one but not both engines. Remember that the usual bad news comes from air being allowed into the fuel line. THAT BEING SAID; a valve that does allow air into the fuel line is a sneaky way to make sure nobody drives you boat more than a few feet if they do not realize what it is doing. I would choose that more quickly than a shut off valve that is obvious as to what it does. The vent to air of that valve should be higher than the engines. just like the tank vent is supposed to be quite high relative to all possible attitudes of the deck. Remember that if the boat is trailered up a ramp "water line" no longer exists just as it no longer exists if your boat is walking on the propeller or making a steep turn. The vent must be high relative to that. **Q: All the internal fuel lines are installed in this tank correct? Meaning all you have to do is drop it in and hook up and go?** A: It comes complete with a float guage . You have to attach your fill hose, vent hose and supply line. I ordered the install kit and mounting clamps. Very nice sturdy tank. **Q: Does this tank have a place to hook grounding wire?** A: Yes **Q: Is the fuel fill connection facing the starboard side? My boat has the fuel fill on the port side.** A: Fuel fill faces to starboard side if installed in boat correctly with outlet connection to the rear. I wonder if this is simply because the tank doesn’t have a fuel return fitting? Moeller does list an optional tank level float sensor that incorporates a diesel return, but this won’t work for me because I need to use my existing Maretron ultrasonic level sensor. Good luck trying to reach Moeller with questions. The so-called customer service number listed on their website went straight to voicemail and gave a company name that wasn’t Moeller. Otherwise this appears to be a strong, well built tank. Moeller makes an amazing variety of size and shape variations to fit almost any boat.
