I use this in soap making to replace EDTA which sticks around in the environment long enough to potentially do damage. Sodium Gluconate lends hardness and acts as a preservative to the soap while softening hard water by chelating out minerals responsible for soap scum. This results in better lather and bubbles and also helps keep your shower/tub clean. Being derived from sugar, it is readily biodegraded by ground microbes that consider it lunch.
