Review: Good product so far - Purchased this 2 years ago and it is still working flawlessly. It's not a heavy bulky item, and seems cheap made. Case is plastic, Approx. 6.5" x 8" but I have used this unit minimum once a week for 2 years now to charge a non-deep cycle car battery I use to start and run a trailer mounted RV generator which I use daily. The battery is usually at about 50 to 60 percent (around 12.3v to 12.4v) according to the lcd display at the end of the week. It takes around 4 to 5 hours to get it back up to 100 percent. I still have a habit of checking and feeling the battery every couple hours just to make sure it is not heating up beyond a certain point because if you have a bad cell, these smart chargers are not going to shut off unless it can get the battery to reach a certain voltage. I like it because it is small, easy to maneuver around and has enough power to charge a completely dead car battery to 100 percent within 10 to 12 hours. If you left a light on and the battery is dead, you are not going anywhere for a few hours. Hopefully you have jumper cables and a good neighbor or extra vehicle if you need to get to work yesterday. The charging electrical leads do not power up till you connect a current (battery) and push the start button and will goto off automatically if the leads are disconnected. So even when it is plugged in and the leads touch you won't pop a fuse or get sparks flying everywhere and will turn off if you kick the cord and one pops off the battery. The one I got in January works fine and no problem. So I liked it and wanted to order another one which I did. Got the one in July and it does not work very well. It takes a long time to get from 99% to 100% and in this time period the battery heats up and smells sulfur very strong. I check the charging voltage with my meter and it is charging 16.4 volts in maintenance mode, way too many volts to be charging that is why it is boiling and heating up. I am sending this one back because I am afraid it could burn out my batteries. We hope the new one coming next week will work like the first one I got. Also it is advertised as a 12 amp, 6 amp and a 3 amp charger this is also wrong. The box even says it is all three amps, that the charger should be... but it only has a 12 amp and a 3 amp charge system. A little like false advertising to me. Also it says it on Amazons web site when you order it. Not really complaining about this but it has been in a lot of reviews and goes way back and nothing has been done about it. I checked Schumacher web site and for the same charger it say the same advertisement with 3 different amp charging rates. You be the Judge..........I got my new charger from the return one and this new one run just like the one I got in January 2014. Works like a champ. Found out about the 3 different amp charge settings... it finds and adjust to the three settings on the advertising. if it is charging on 3 amp it will use from 1 to 3 amp what ever the processer think is best for the battery condition. When it is on 12 amp it is using from 6 amp to 12 amp automatic with the processer to what ever it think the batter needs. Like if it is 90% charged and you put it on to 12 amp charge the processer might decide to only use 6 amp or 8amp to charge a battery in real good shape... So it does not necessary use 12 amp charge when set to 12 amp charge it could use from 6 amp to 12 amp on the information from the processor.. This is what a tech from Schumacher told me it is a new update on this charger... I love this charger and now have two that run like a champ and sent back one.. that is why I rated it a 4 * I would of gave it a 5 if I did not have trouble with the second one and had to send it back.
