The fake flames will automatically flicker which ever way is up. The plastic shell does not get hot, it does get slightly warm when they are being used. I've dropped them a time or two and they're completely fine. **Q: Does these light bulbs work with a dimmer ?** A: Yes, they do. I let both of mine charge for about 3 to 4 hours when I first got them. The base turns from red when charging to green when it's charged. The built-in rechargeable batteries came with USB cords for charging. Per my video, they are bright and look great and very noticeable even with other lights that are on full brightness of about 12800 total lumens coming from 8 cool ultra white daylight bulbs in the same room / 8 ft away. Of course, when I switch off the daylight bulbs, they look better and brighter. They also come with little hooks to hang them anywhere and they're not that heavy and made of thick solid plastic. You can position them upright too. The flickering flames will automatically switch sides of the bulb depending which direction they are facing. There is no remote which would be nice and they do not have a dimmer, but they do offer a glow setting that does not flicker or a pulsating glow setting. Not yet sure how long the batteries will run, but I will update on that. These are great in general, but especially because I do not want to replace regular lights and light bulbs inside of my home with flickering flames, so buying ones you screw into a light socket is not ideal for my purposes. I wanted ones that could go anywhere like in a lantern or candle holder. I am happy to be able to move them around or bring them outside without having them plugged in. They add a nice touch for ambience, decor, entertaining, and as a night light or on a patio. They probably look even better behind a fogged glass / something do you do not see the actual bulb... (Like the transparent silver glitter mesh I will be applying to the inside of each glass lantern just to be extra). I'll probably order a few more sets to place in the rest of my lanterns. And they do not get hot. The downside is brief and simple, you only get about 3 hours (max) on each light before it will have to be recharged. It takes several hours to charge them on the usb. I'd suggest to the manufacturers that they find a more robust battery to marry to this unit -- a slow charge should mean a slow discharge in the batter world but it doesn't seem to work that way.But they are a fun little item that can be dressed up in a way that hides the plastic shell and adds instant firelight to any room you want to hang one in. We've had quite a bit of fun with these over the holiday and they'll probably get used for the rest of the year -- if not inside, then out in our 'cabin' (screened in deck) until we start going to bed before the sun does. Then they'll get used again in the fall. Cordless! *by M***K on Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2019* The built-in battery and USB charging (which means you can extend the runtime with now-common USB power packs) make these useful in making handheld props like torches and lanterns, and for the size and brightness of the fake flame, which are comparable to store tiki torches and oil lamps, these bulbs are just right (oil or tar-based "dirty" flames; this bulb has a fairly orange flame so it doesn't appear as bright/white as kerosene lanterns). However, be aware that within 10 feet it's easier to see that the "flame" is contained in a bulb-like shape if looking directly at the "flame".If you want to make a very good illusion of flame even up close, it's enough to put the bulb behind frosted/"dirtied" glass or plastic and have the flame glow through, or simply hide the bulb in a sconce or shade and have the flickering light bounce off nearby surfaces. At that point the main things threatening the illusion would be 1) lack of smoke smell, 2) lack of heat, and 3) a mismatch with the amount of wind/breezes in the area (the flickering on this bulb would be hard to believe on a resting candle or lamp in a shuttered room; while this bulb does have a "breathing" mode, that mode is probably too slow/gentle to make a believable indoor candle).
