Review: A Budget-Friendly Lifesaver for Cosmetic Repairs - It is highly effective for DIY projects like fixing a rotted door jamb or a decorative pillar. It’s the "Stage 1" of a two-stage repair.
Review: Good product would recommend - Purchased the product due to reviews. Instead of using the bottle I simply poured some into a disposable plastic cup and used a disposable paint brush and soaked all of the rotted wood area (after I cleaned it out as best I could). At first I did not think the product would take as it looked like the wood was simply soaking it all up. Thinking I would have to come back with a second coat. I looked at it the next day and sure enough the product had sealed the rotted wood area and it almost looked like a varnish was left behind. Smells like good ole fashion Elmers glue. Came back later with Elmers rotted wood putty purchased here on desertcart and finished the job with the putty to seal it up. Both products worked well together from what I can tell. ## Questions & Answers

**Q: What happens if you use this below 55°F? And what happens if temps go below 32°F overnight?**
A: pretty sure this stuff will freeze like water, so i wouldn't use it if the temp goes below freezing. I think lower temps slows down the hardening process. This stuff really works well when applied as per directions

**Q: How do you open the bottle?**
A: You can punch a hole through the top of the nozzle or cut the tip open. Thank you for your inquiry.

**Q: I used copper green wood preservative on rotted wood hoping it would harden the wood but didn't. can i use this on top of it to harden?**
A: Probably. I don’t know why the copper preservative would impact the Elmer’s. I’ve used Elmer’s, solvent based wood hardener, and epoxy wood hardener. First for any of them to work well the wood had to be dried out. Of the 3, the solvent based products do the best job of penetrating deeply but the hardening is somewhat limited. I find that the epoxy is probably the best compromise for penetrating and hardening but it is messy and a bit expensive. I like the Elmer’s the most for sealing and hardening the surface and the layer immediately under it.

**Q: How long after applying this Elmers 'hardener' before I can put wood filler in the crack? It's less than a third of an inch at widest part.**
A: Depending upon drying conditions, I give it 4-6 hours minimum. If weather permits, I let it dry over night then add the wood filler.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good product but does not penetrate the wood.
*by P***M on December 1, 2013*

The squeeze bottle application was helpful in enabling me to get the stuff in all the nooks and crannies. It took quite a while to cure completely (it was 50-60 degrees outside) but it seems to have sealed the defect adequately and it seemed to bond with the Bondo I used over it. The Minwax stabilizer actually penetrates the wood whereas the Elmers product does not, so if the rotted defect is deep and extensive, I would use the Minwax product first. And if you're as anal retentive as I am, you would use the Minwax product first, followed by an application of the Elmers product.
