I only hear it running if I’m really paying attention, and it’s only once or twice a day. It will start humming a little while it is heating/cooling the separate water compartments. I used to have a top load machine and I was sick of having to flip a 5 gallon jug of water upside down while trying not to spill it everywhere in the process, so this is exactly what I needed! Also has a nice little nightlight that you can switch on and off, great for me because I keep it in my room for filling my water bottle and making tea (hot water is BOILING hot, so that works great too!) so it’s nice to have light source if I get up to get a drink in the middle of the night. And I don’t have to walk all the way to the kitchen which is the best part 😁 Only issue I’ve had is that the little error light to switch out the jug will sometimes stay on after I’ve just put one in, but if you just open and close the door, that fixes it right away. I guess opening and closing the door activates some kind of sensor that tests how much water is in the jug. You can also turn the hot and cold water features off individually which is great! If I ever have someone visiting with tiny humans, I can shut the hot water portion off completely. Don't want hot, turn it off and no hot water. **Q: Does it require to plug in to a power plug even if I only need a regular room temperature water?** A: I am reasonably certain that power is required even if the only spigot employed by the user is the room temp. water control. The water supply is below the level of the spigot. **Q: Can you shut off the hot water dispenser if you only use the cold ?** A: Yes! There is a button/switch on the back of the dispenser. **Q: If you disable the child lock for hot water, do you still need to touch the button on the hot water dispenser to get hot water? Really touchless?** A: I don't think you can disable the button without causing other problems. You are better off buying a replacement cold water handle and replace it onto the hot side. you should be able to use the existing red paddle after you remove it.
