We did try it on the pond near our house and started to lose range after only about 25 ft. It has held up so far though. The remote control doubles as the charging doc and the batteries recharge the boat. We haven't needed to replace the batteries yet, but my kid only plays with it for about 5 minutes at a time. It has capsized and been submerged a dew times with no apparent damage.
