Connect the hose to the unit, open the valves and start refilling the tank by pumping the handle until gas begins to flow. Hold the handle open until the tank is filled, then release the handle to stop the flow.Second best way (when you cannot position the unit above the tank being filled): Attach the hose to the unit, open the valves and pump the handle continuously to fill the tank. When the tank is filled, stop pumping and release the handle. **Q: does this leak when layed down?** A: Not at all! I drove over 3000 miles with it and it did not leak one drop. I even off roaded with it, it is very durable and well worth the money! It almost gave me a full tank and I have a 2011 crew cab Toyota Tundra **Q: Can you use this to pump or siphon fuel from another car so I can get fuel from our other car in times of emergency?** A: Siphoning gas from almost all modern cars is practically impossible since they are equipped with an anti-siphon screen in the fuel filler pipe. You can't get the hose into the gas tank at all. **Q: Is there a power pump handle option** A: I am not aware of any flow enhancement device for this unit. This unit uses a gravity/siphon type system. I use it to transfer gasoline from the dock to a boat tank which is always located lower than the Duramax.
