It is a little see-through, but the pattern seems to hide important areas to hide (even though it shows my nipple rings). I wouldn't wear it around kids, just in case, but it's fine to wear with friends. I've asked a few people if they can see through it and they said not unless they're looking for it, so it's not obvious. It does tan through just a little bit, but don't expect the same results as laying out naked, however, it does help blend in the areas that don't typically get sun. I have seen reviews that say that they're disappointed that it doesn't entirely tan you, but you're still putting fabric on your body, so it's expected for it not to tan all the way. The edges and straps are folded over fabric... just like any other piece of clothing, so yes, expect tan lines from the straps.
