I don't know where she got her cosmetology license or how long it's been since she got it, but...wow. First, blonde hair dye kits WILL lighten your hair. You absolutely don't need to bleach unless you want to lift your hair more than 2 or 3 levels. Permanent hair dye has come a long way and hydrogen peroxide isn't needed in all blonde hair dye kits. There are other chemicals in these kits that lighten hair. ~Ammonia compounds swell the hair shaft, allowing it to open so the dye gets into the cuticle (permanent hair dyes are NOT deposit only, despite what Amanda said) ~Oxidative compounds, (such and organic and inorganic alkali metal salts) ~ ...and a whole slew of other chemical compounds that will allow the mixture to penetrate the hair shaft, lighten hair and deposit the color to the inner layer of the hair. Also, the kits(for blonde) always come with a 20 volume developer. All developer has hydrogen peroxide (HP) in it. 10 volume = 3% HP 20 volume = 6% HP 30 volume = 9% HP The higher the volume, the higher the lift. If your hair is medium/light red and you want your hair to look like the color on the Champagne Blonde box, you might consider using a 30 volume developer instead of the 20 volume in the box. Using 30 volume requires frequent checking the hair while it's processing to make sure it's not getting too light, but, from my three decades of experience dyeing my own hair from dark blonde with reddish undertones/level 6-7 to a level 8-9 ash blonde using 30 volume ~always~ results in my hair turning out pretty damn close to the color on the box. You can order 30 volume developer from Sally Beauty online and it's cheap...like $6 to $10 bucks. Take the bottle of 20 volume developer out of the box, draw a line that shows how much developer is in it, pour out the 20 volume then refill the bottle up to the line you drew with 30 volume. Two days after coloring, apply a protein conditioning mask to your hair because any time you lighten your hair, your hair gets a little pissed off and needs some extra care. This Champagne color covers it all and evens it out. I put the color on the back of my head, roots only and do the front last. I time it for 40 mins. and then apply to my remaining hair for 10 mins.
