Until 1978 lead base paint was manufactured. Get lead paint testers to see what you are working with. These paints are a health hazard when they give off vapors. Look online to find out the hazards about lead base paints. The EPA has guide lines for contractors to follow that vary from state to state in the USA. Like respirators and white suits along with using drop clothes to contain that type of paint. Different paints will soften at different temperatures. I find around 700 degrees may be a good starting point. If you go too high with the heat you'll burn the wood. To low and the paint won't soften. That's basically it in a nut shell. Kevin M **Q: is it good for making cosplays and heating foam?** A: If you're talking about EVA foam: yes. Just make sure you don't set it too hot. EVA foam begins to melt at around 165 fahrenheit, so set the gun to 200 and wear a respirator. DO NOT WEAR A DUST MASK! If it doesn't have replaceable filters, it's a dust mask, which is for keeping dust and other large particles out of your airway and making smelly jobs more comfortable. It DOES NOT protect against the toxic vapors that will be released when you get EVA foam hot enough to shape or seal it. Set the gun to 200F (assuming you're working with EVA foam), work OUTDOORS and wear a respirator (not a painter's mask/dust mask!). Hotter might be okay but since the gun only goes in increments of 50, you might not want to go above 200. Try it with a scrap piece and see how it goes. **Q: Does anyone know if it can be used to soften pex for easier bending?** A: Dan, I thought this would be a good heat gun, I was going to use it to pull out dented plastic bumpers, but I was not impressed with the amount of heat it generated. I think my hair blow dryer puts out more heat and I do not know if this is normal or the one I got was defective. By the time I got to use it I was not able to return it so I'm stuck with it. Hopefully someone else tells you that it produces enough heat to so what you want it to do, but my answer would be no, or you will be holding it a long time to get it hot enough.
