Review: Perfect for homemade laundry detergent! - I bought this for making homemade dry laundry soap, I have been making my own for close to 10 years. I became tired of feeling like my clothes were never truly clean, especially our gym clothes and even more tired of all the over powering scents. I know the chemicals used to create these smells are not healthy and covering my entire body in clothes covered in them seemed like a bad choice. Washing soda is the one ingredient that's tough for me to find in the stores. I used Arm & Hammer washing soda for years but since our move to Western Washington I have been unable to find it at local grocery stores. I have been using this for a couple months now and my clothes are just as clean as before making the switch to this brand. It comes in a one gallon bucket that's a bit of a pain to open the first time but a wonderful alternative to the cardboard boxes this generally comes in when buying a&h. I am excited to be able to reuse it to store my finished soap in once empty as the container I currently use isn't as nice. They also make a borax that once I run out of my current supply I intend to try. Also for the amount, one gallon, the price is a great value, I have no complaints and would recommend this to anyone. For anyone curious here is the ingredients for homemade laundry soap: 1 Dr. Bonners bar of soap (shredded) 1-2 cups of borax 1-2 cups of washing soda 1/2-1 cup of baking soda I started off at the small end of ingredients and added more until I found a ratio that works for me. I use distilled white vinegar as a fabric softer. I use 1/4 of a cup of soap for a regular sized load and about 1 cup of vinegar. My clothes are soft, smell fresh, and never like vinegar. I will never go back to conventional laundry detergents, for me this is the best way to keep my clothes clean.
Review: Good product - Great quality! I use this washing soda to make my powdered laundry soap. It is great for what I need it for. It also came sealed very tight so there was no leaking. Just an overall great product. No weird smell and cleans my clothes very well! A little powder goes a long way.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this cruelty free**
A: Yes, Earthborn Elements Washing Soda is cruelty-free. We are a cruelty-free company. We do not test our products on animals and do not hire another company to do it for us. We are also very discerning when it comes to our suppliers and only source ingredients from other companies that are also cruelty-free.

**Q: Is this for laundry, or do I have to make laundry detergent out of it**
A: If you add 25% Borax, it makes a good laundry soap.
Here is what I do to make 5 gallons liquid laundry soap (which will gel when cooled)
Boil a large pot of distilled water.
Take 1 bar of Zest (or any brand without a lot of chemicals), and shave it down into fine pieces. (I use a cheese grater).
Add the fine pieces of bar soap to the water and melt it.
Pour the soap water into the 5 gallon bucket.
Add 2-3 cups of Washing Soda.
Add 1-2 cup Borax.
Add 1-2 cup Baking Soda.
Mix well.
Add more distilled water to fill bucket.
I've been using this home made non-toxic laundry soap for years.

**Q: has anyone tried using this by itself to replace laundry detergent?**
A: Yes! In an effort to be frugal and eco friendly I started using straight washing soda over 2 years ago. I'm the kind of person who researches everything to death; read the pros and cons of all different ingredients and homemade recipes and decided just to try straight washing soda. No smelly or dingy clothes, though a good spot remover is still necessary. Mind you I'm only washing adult, sometimes lightly soiled clothing so your mileage may vary.

I have a top loader so I start the machine on warm, add the washing soda and let it dissolve a bit, then typically switch to cool and add my laundry. I don't have specific measurements to give since I am using a small scoop from my last and final canister of OxiClean Free (not as green as I thought!). Honestly though I'm probably using too much- and it only takes a couple tablespoons- as I read the agitator does most of the work.

**Q: If it's so non toxic why the scary warning on the side if you get it on your hands? I'm confused.**
A: It is a strong base. A strong base much like a strong acid can burn you. Though in its powdered form can just be brushed off.
