In all seriousness, the explosions are of decorative glass sinks which are tempered to ensue large shards are not produced when they do break. However, this process puts the glass under stress, so any cracking can quickly escalate to an explosion of the sink into numerous small chucks all over. I presume that the gaskets used with this drain prevent any additional stress on the glass sink during its installation and use. **Q: do i have to remove the old plunger rod to install this?** A: Your old plunger rod will not work with this. You can remove it or leave it in place, but it will do nothing. I removed mine. This works by pressing down on the stopper to lock it down. Pressing down a second time will release it and it will pop back up on its own. The stopper/strainer basket assembly is easily removable by simply lifting up on the stopper. This allows you to check the strainer basket for hair or other debris which frequently clogs up the drains in the lever action type of drains. They prevent the sink from ever overflowing. If the sink you want to use this stopper in has one of those holes, make sure you get the "Overflow" type. If your sink does not have one of those holes, make sure to order the "non-overflow. The "anti explosion" feature simply means that these stoppers will not allow pressure to build up in the drain pipes. They will sop water from running out of the sink when closed, but do not sop any air from escaping out of the pipes (this would really only matter in the non-overflow type **Q: Is rust a common problem with this product?
