## Description

Chufas Food Plot Seed (Cyperus esculentus) Chufas are great for Turkey, Deer and other wildlife. Plant 25-50 lbs. - per acre Chufas are a bunch grass with a peanut like underground nut - used for food plots of deer, turkey, hogs and wild hogs. This legume is very similar to peanuts, if you have ever seen hogs rooting peanuts, they go after chufas the same way. Plant in spring through summer. Wildlife digs up the chufas once they mature. Chufas are perennial sedges that are one of the most popular foods for wild turkeys. Chufa plants have underground tubers, which are part of the plant that turkeys eat. One chufas tuber will produce a plant that can grow to 15-75 tubers when mature. Turkeys find the tubers by scratching them from just under the surface of the ground. The tubers are high in protein and fat, which makes them especially nutritious for wild turkeys. Chufa can also make an excellent food source for other wildlife including deer and ducks. Chufa plants grow well in the southern half of the US from Northern California across to Southern Iowa and even Southern Pennsylvania. Chufa plants grow in a variety of soil, but perform best on well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. Clay soils can support chufa. When growing in clay soils, lightly turn the soil in the fall to expose the tubers. This practice can be done periodically to extend the food supply into winter and early spring. Simply plow several strips twice a month until the entire field has been plowed. Generally, chufa will grow anywhere that corn can be successfully grown.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this for animal or human consumption?**
A: For planting and animal consumption.

**Q: Can these be grown for human consumption?**
A: Yes they snack on them in Africa. Check out the various things they do with tigernut AKA chufa seeds on YouTube.

**Q: My seeds smell like horse poop, is it normal? I fiil like the chufa milk I made has also a hint of the smell (i did cleaned them well before making it**
A: Did you rinse them well and also soaked them 24 or more hours? I do not remember my chufa seeds smelling like poop... They smell a bit nutty and earthy when dry. I rinsed them a lot, 3 times in a small bucket or big bowl (2 cups to make horchata or tiger nut or chufa milk) because they're not organic and they're tubers under the ground or soil. I used a wooden spatula to stir them well in the water, so they would let go any dirt or soil on them. The water at 1st was a bit brown. I soaked them for 24 hours, changing the water once a day with a pinch of salt, so they hydrate more and plump up, to get better milk. 3 days of soaking is even better, so I can reuse the pulp with more water to make more milk; because this brand of chufas are very dry and wrinkled. Before blending them with spring water to make them milk, I rinsed them again 2 or 3 times. My horchata tasted like chufa milk does, very good, a bit nutty but not like poop at all. I like adding a pinch of cinnamon to it when I blend it, just like we do in Spain.

**Q: Can these be eaten instead of planted? Just want to make sure these haven't been treated with a pesticide or any other chemicals.**
A: Yes, definitely.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Super happy
*by C***R on February 24, 2021*

They’re great. As mentioned, once you wash and soak them, they swell up, so the small thing isn’t a big deal bc they swell to the same size as other tiger nuts, and taster just as sweet and “tiger nutty” and make great milk. I recommend a 3 day soak just bc why not but you could do a one day. Might be a little too hard if you don’t soak them at all though. Oh, also as mentioned, they smell a little “earthy” right out of the bag, but whatever I for this price I just wash them with non toxic soap thoroughly and then soak and no smell after that at all. And the earthy smell is on the outside, like they taste just the same as other tigernuts. Overall I’m super happy!
