They worked right out of the box, without any charging. I got them in the fall, and they have worked throughout the winter even though sometimes the solar panel can be partially covered up with snow and our days are short. The lights flicker and they truly look like a flame or torch. I love driving in the driveway after dark and seeing all the Torches glowing and flickering and amber color. This is much nicer than bright white LED lights. The flow is very soft and welcoming. They look good year round, but these also make a great Halloween decor for the yard. They also have additional settings so you can have either a flickering affect or a solid light.
