This performance was so intriguing that you're invested, all in. It's slow to start only because his backstory is significant in regards to his character's "purpose". This movie is a hidden gem. Vince Vaughn is one of my favorite actors. I've always had a crush on him;) The role he played in this ("Bradley") was flawless-- no other actor would do it justice. I loved loved loved seeing him in action-- he's a beast! Prepare to cover your eyes a few times...Expect some scenes to be intensely brutal. Necessarily so. "Bradley" is in a "life or death"/"lose/lose" type of situation. His ability to communicate (verbally and physically) turns his unfavorable situation into a tremendously entertaining hour and a half. There's not a lot of dialogue from "Bradley", however, when he does speak, it is intelligently whitty (as always). I love his "land the plane" responses. He definitely gets his point across. I usually watch movie trailers before picking what to watch. This one had far more depth than the movie trailer portrayed. But, I love Vine Vaughn and that's why I gave it a shot. I can't stop telling people they HAVE TO SEE this. So, EVERYONE -- see this! I apologize for being so verbose...I've NEVER posted a movie review before this. However, it's a bad ass flick that deserves credit. Don Johnson nailed his role, too. He plays this sick f$@k warden and I loved it. Not only is the "Warden" still handsome, but he is a clever, sadistic bad ass. Lastly, it's absutely worth the 5 minutes to give this film 5 stars! Review: Absolutely AWESOME! - Ever since I saw Craig Zahler film, Bone Tomahawk, I couldn't wait to see what his next film project was going to be and here we are with Brawl In Cell Block 99 which absolutely floored me! When I read that Vince Vaughn was going to be in this film, I will admit that I was a bit skeptical but I can see why the director casted V. Vaughn for this film because this film was perfect for Vaughn and you will see why after you finish watching this unique film. The characters, the theme/tone of the film, soundtrack, story, etc really made every minute of this film perfect. Not a single minute was wasted and the film length is perfect too. Please do yourself a favor and ignore all reviews because a lot of the reviews across the internet and desertcart itself will give out any type of detail regarding this film. You can see how I don't give out any shred of detail about the story/plot, names of characters or songs, etc. Just ignore it and watch this film without watching the trailer as well because I am SO glad that I didn't watch any of the trailers until AFTER watching this film because the trailer is spoiler alert. Sadly, too many people will watch the trailer and will already have their minds 85% convinced on this film being good or bad which is a shame. Anyways, once again I will say that after seeing Bone Tomahawk and Brawl In Cell Block 99, I am certainly very much looking forward to S. Craig Zahler next film. Oh, if you own or do not own Bone Tomahawk digitally or physically, don't bother renting this film because you will end up buying (owning) the film immediately after finishing this film. It's a good film that has some issues. That said, Vince Vaughan, who's come a long way from "Swingers," holds his own lol. Here's the deal: it starts out something like American History X introducing some heavy moral dilemmas, then over time evolves into something the likes of which David Lynch might have dreamed up -- something in excess of an individual human tragedy (No Country for Old Men springs to mind by way of comparison). I mean, don't go in expecting any great epiphanies -- it should be evident five minutes in that, whatever else, Vaughan's character isn't much given to critical self-reflection. I like the gritty realism -- it definitely fits in with the understated narrative. Still, there are some odd sequence breaks and some scenes that go on too long or that could have been easily left on the cutting room floor. And the story line is sustained not so much by plot, but by the spectacle of violence. In a word, it's relentless. But don't let that stop you! ;) Another movie that sprang to mind watching this was "Drive." You have here the same reliance on ambiance (that edges toward noir at some points) as the principal medium for portraying character development and for building tensions between characters (i.e. in preference to doing so through dialog). It's a little uneven, sometimes even quite abrupt.
