It was first launched in 1939 as a pot still whiskey supplied by Jameson to whiskey bonders before bottling at the distillery became the norm in 1968. Thus Redbreast all but disappeared until its re-launch by the distillery in the 1990s as a single pot still whiskey. Using water from the Dungourney river beside the Middleton Distillery the malted and unmalted barley is fermented to a wash of 8 percent abv, then distilled in copper pot stills. Matured for a minimum of 12 years in a combination of Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks and American oak ex-Bourbon barrels. Like all good pot still whiskeys, it is strongly flavoured and assertive, making it a rare treat for the connoisseur of fine old whiskey and very different to the rest of the Jameson range. It’s well balanced, easy to sip, and feels both comforting and refined with every dram.While it’s not the cheapest bottle on the shelf, the quality more than justifies the price, making it excellent value for money. It's smooth, easy to drink, and has loads of flavour without being too strong or harsh.Nice mix of fruity sweetness and a bit of spice.It's a go to in Ireland when decent whiskey is spoken about or considering a gift for someone. Not much movement on price but Β£50-55 is fair and can't be purchased for much less elsewhere.It's one that gets restocked every time we run out. Β£55 might seem a scary price but it's Β£12-15 a measure in the pub.
