The other night, my buddy and I started talking rulers and measuring tools while we were hanging out in his shop and decided to compare my Mitutoyo (this model) to his $35 Starrett 6-inch ruler (the equivalent to this one). We used his $200-some-dollar Starrett electronic caliper (he has way more high end measuring tools than I do and is a measuring-accuracy fanatic) to compare measurement markings on both rulers. We could find no difference, looking at them under bright light, using a magnifying glass and being very careful. We had time on our hands and a beer or two under our belts. :-) In our opinion, at least as far as this 6-inch ruler goes, it's as accurate as an equivalent Starrett ruler that costs over twice as much. The construction, durability, and readability is just as good also. It didn't cause him to rethink being a long-time Starrett fan, but he admitted this is a good ruler that's accurate and built well enough to do anything his Starrett will do with results just as good. I'm going to keep an eye on his tools going forward, to see if anything that says "Mitutoyo" shows up in his collection. TL,DR: This is a very accurate and well made ruler, on par with with one of the best names in the business, and will serve you very well for anything you need a 6-inch ruler to do. And is the zero at the edge?** A: There are two sides: one side is graduated in inches (32nds and 64ths) and the other side is in milimeters (mm and 1/2 mm). On both sides, the zero is at an end. **Q: What is the total length?** A: Just as pictured the length of the ruler is 6 inches. If you are concerned with a sometimes problem with really really cheap rulers that have a first graduation that is either too small or too large, thus making the first inch a problem; don't worry. I've purchased three of these rulers and all have a standard size first division. They are well manufactured! **Q: Normally stainless steel isn't magnetic. sometimes a magnet will stick to the finish. can you tell me if a magnet will stick to this ruler?** A: Stainless steel exists on a spectrum. The higher the chromium (and other rustles minerals) the more stainless it is. The finish, unless some sort of iron based finish I’m unaware of, does not play a role in its being magnetic. This ruler is attracted to magnets. **Q: Is the ruler flexible or stiff?** A: Stiff. It's a very good rule.
