When a load is not running, the converter uses a very small amount of standby power which is owing in part to the toroidal transformer (which also accounts for the transformer's weight). The converter's output consists of two receptacles - one is 100VAC (Japan) and the other is 110VAC (North America). Be careful which one you plug your 120VAC device into. I've applied a small piece of electrical tape across the 100VAC outlet to ensure I don't mistakenly use it. All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and would purchase again should I need an additional unit.
