My handle just totally snapped off after 2 years. Not sure what I’m going to do to fix it. **Q: Are the handle & gears metal?** A: The handle is plastic and I believe the gears are too... no rusting that way! it's been a great compost. a tip is to add worms to your compost for things to decay faster. **Q: Is the turn handle plastic? I'm concerned about it cracking under pressure. Has anyone had any issues with it?** A: The handle is made of thick plastic that is thick and well engineered. Plus, remember that the crank should be turned slowly. I am not concerned at all about it failing in any way. **Q: I cannot open the access doors on cold days in winter. any suggestions? i live in new jersey. i basically cannot add anything to the unit in winter.** A: It may be that the warmth of the days sun created condensation inside which froze in the cold nights. Was the unit full or have a lot of moisture inside when the temperatures went down? Were the access doors at the top of the unit or down farther under the stuff inside? I have so far not had this problem with mine. I empty most of the compost when we hit freezing temperatures here in Michigan. When there is a lot of weight inside and it freezes solid, if you rotate the barrel and the access doors reach the bottom of the cycle, the heavy, frozen solid compost may break loose inside and crash onto the access doors and literally tear them off.
