The pins themselves are bone and are quite thick. It took quite a lot of elbow grease to sand them down to the right size for my Epiphone Inspired by Hummer. However the effort is worth it as the sound is definately richer with the bone pins compared with the stock plastic ones. I don't know why they supply the guitar with the stock plastic pins but bridge and nut are alledgely bone.
